Bloody Knuckles doing your knuckles...

Looks great - and inspiring me to do mine...
If I ever do another it’ll be on a lift. My lower back is toast. Also, I promised myself after the last one I did that I’d get a parts washer. I lied to me and I’m mad at me for that. Soaking the really caked on parts in mineral spirits overnight really helps, but still requires a lot of manual mechanical removal.

The only real Gotcha was that one of my Warn hubs had a cracked engagement sleeve (my term) on the inside, also, the gaskets I ordered from a place that I try not to do business with anymore were wrong so instead of trying to rebuild the warns, I ordered up some Aisins. I like the inner workings of the Aisins as opposed to the warns which just seem too complicated.

Naturally, I didn’t have the snap rings as the warns are held on by a bolt/washer so I’m waiting on those.

Installed the warns so I could drive and will swap out the hubs next week.

The steering is now nice and tight as the preload previously didn’t even register on my scale.

A note to anyone switching from Warn to Aisin hubs:
You will need snap rings x 2 and cone washers x 12. Also, you’ll probably need a set of hub face gaskets.

Cruiser TEQ has these readily available.
They also have the hubs although I got these from Summit as they were able to overnight them for stupid cheap.

Is Cruiser teq still only including Aisin hub gaskets and no warn gaskets? I thought they would have corrected that by now, or at least point out Aisin only in the kit. I think at least 50 % of the 40s are Warn.

Unsure.

I ordered a couple gasket kits from them the last time I did a knuckle job and they’re for the Aisins I was doing and I got a the extra set to cover all the rest of the gaskets. They know what’s up.

The place that I shall not mention that I thought I was buying Warn hubface gaskets from sent me Aisin ones. This was quite awhile ago before I got burned too many times by them.

Kurt @cruiseroutfit can you answer this?

Yes, AISIN & ASCO gaskets only. I think we do an adequate job of pointing out AISIN/ASCO in the kit??

We offer the Warn gasket sets for the most common Warn hub styles but there are many derivatives of Warn hubs and they don't/won't sell individual parts, full kits only. While the common Warn style (non barrel) are likely the highest share of non-AISIN hubs found on a 4x/5x, they are certainly not found on at least 50% of the 1975-1990 knuckle kit we offer. I'd suspect that number is closer to 5% total and perhaps 20-30% on 4x/5x in particular. Many have the other styles of Warn, Superwinch, Selectro, Sears, AVM, Fairey, etc hubs. If there was a high enough demand for Warn gaskets, we could look into getting them made but too date I only hear about it every few years.

Some of the non Warn's in my collection :D

When I briefly flirted with repairing the damaged warn, I quickly realized I wasn’t going to find/parts alone. Rather than that fruitless chase I just went with the Aisin as I knew I had a support system in cruiser TEQ.

Your website is pretty darned good about descriptions and you always ship fast.

I have many of your decals, probably should get a hat someday.

i’ll be doing this soon too! parts will be in my possession in a few weeks!
Not my favorite job.

Bandaids and beer seem to help.

Thank you! We need to get some hats going again soon!

And lots and lots and lots of paper towels!

i’ve done it about 5 or 6 times now one various cruisers. i actually don’t mind it. it’s a messy job but it’ll be fun to show my boys how cool the inside of these axles are! i likely won’t find time until later in the spring but i’ll collect all the parts and find a weekend coming up! after looking on cruiser teq website i see that the drum brake kit comes with aisin hub gaskets too! i’ll have to see if i can get some warn ones too. l like my aisins better but i’ll live with the warn ones for now.

Well Kurt, I apologize. Granted I rebuilt my knuckles like 8 years ago. When I called to ask if you had warn gaskets, it was suggested I trim the gaskets to fit. I was a little disappointed. The picture of the hub is of the very common warn I’m referring to.

Sadist.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the last two I did weren’t left to get to the state they were in.
It’d be a safe bet neither were touched since the factory did them.

I don’t see how the Aisin gaskets would fit as the hole pattern is off to start.

If ever need parts for yours, mine will be in a box or up for sale, same hubs.

Well, technically the FA6975 comes with the ASCO (AISIN didn't exist then) hub face gasket as those were an OE hub on the drum brake axle. The most common style in that era was the ASCO knob variant that was found on the FJ55. They are rare but not as rare as the more traditional ASCO/AISIN style hub but with the 6 spline course drum axles. Of all the hubs I've collected, I've still not been able to find a set of course ASCO's to own BUT I've got a local customer with them, they do exist. The ASCO knob style doesn't use a gasket as it doesn't have a face :D

You may laugh at this, we used to pull those ASCO/AISIN gaskets out of the drum kits, when we had a few thousand in stock, I figured it was easier to let customers throw them away as it unfortunately doesn't save us any money to get the Joint Fuji shim/gasket kits without them. :D

Did I mention I like hubs? This is my office coffee table, I need to build a couple more to house them all :D

Not a worry at all. I don't recall when we started stocking the Warn kits, I though it was much longer than 8 years so perhaps something that was out of stock at the time. Sadly Warn was still making the fine spline traditional hub right up until a few months ago. It still fit the 9/75-1/79 long 4x/5x birf too. They discontinued it and said the hub service kit isn't too far behind it :(

I absolutely looooove the AISIN hub, but a Warn looks right at home on a 40 too

Mmmmmm

I know next to nothing about hubs but have been inside (😏) of both, the warns seem overly complicated compared to the aisins.

Unsure how the inner engagement sleeve broke, it is still attached but by a thread. Honestly could probably have run them for years down the road but would rather just make it right “while I’m in there”.
