I wouldn't waist my time measuring caster until the complete suspension has been installed. You should set the suspension to ride height with the suspension loaded on level ground then measure. The difference in height frt to rear is going to skew your #'s. I would probably try the 6* shims. A little more caster helps in tracking and rtc. I'm running 4" skyjackers with 4* shims, and I've shorten my shackles slightly to get to about 1* positive caster. It currently drives and handles great, but I'll be adding 6* shims. I think it will handle and rtc better. Right now the wheel is a little sluggish coming back to center. I also plan to rebuild the knuckles. Once your shims are installed, droop the frt suspension and make sure the driveshaft rotates freely. Sometimes the U joint yolks can interfere with each other.
Good point about full suspension install, duly noted.

could you clarify “droop the front suspension”?
Asking for a friend…

Support the 40 by putting the jack stands under the frame and unload the frt suspension and allow it to dangle/droop. By adding caster shims it rotates the pinion flange downward which changes the driveshaft angle at the pinion. It's likley ok at ride height, but could be an issue when the suspension is unloaded. The yokes could bind against each other and slight clearancing might be required.

Copy. Wilco.
My “friend” thanks you.

While on this subject, Kurt, while not a huge issue, these paper sticker tags y’all put on here feel like you’re messing with us. They suck.

Sorry about the spring pin issue, super random. We've not had issues with that pin over the years. Your label issue is heard and we are working towards eliminating that method and instead bagging them individually with a label. Toyota has been putting labels on parts including sheet metal body parts for many years and it drives me nuts.

All good Kurt, you guys are great. Chance took care of me instantly. Plus, if there is a flaw in a system, it’ll find me 🤷🏽.

Messing with you about the stickers, kind of. It’s the ones that disintegrate immediately when you try to peel them that really ruffle my feathers. There is just something so satisfying when a sticker peels off cleanly.

Not much happening except I hauled Norman up to my property in the mountains. Playing with timing and fuel/air as I’m at 10,000’. Did get a high altitude jet kit but took an almost 100mile drive through a few passes with no real issues.

I think I’d have to move there and build a little cabin….
It’s pretty amazing for sure.

Tooling around the state land near my property.

Slowly getting buttoned up for the trip to SAS.
Did the 125 mile Enchanted Circle loop yesterday, Angel Fire to Taos to Red River to Eagle Nest and back. Hit two breweries and one ethanol free fill up.

She’s running pretty good, think I might up my Air Corrector jets one more size.

Pulled a @Roastchestnuts and accidentally bought a TROA soft top that is stuck in Miami. Was hoping to get it before the trip but it’s not looking great.

Accidentally got a TROA... Nice!

That is a great loop for shaking down. Wish it was different for me here & be there and shake Yellr down with ya - breweries would be a good spot refuel. Maybe next year for SAS.

Awesome setup by the way.

Thanks Bryan,
It was good to check how the carb was reacting to altitude changes. Lowest was about 7k highest was mid 10’s.

Struggling up hill unless I come at it with higher RPM’s then sometimes I can actually accelerate up hill 🤯.

Going to swap out AC jets and see if that helps or if I’m just driving an FJ40…

Envious of the summer digs!

Well that ain’t bad. You abandoned Austin for the summer?

SAS 8
Here is my attempt at a SAS trip report and some highlights as I make my way (via a stop at the brewery in Eagle Nest) back to camp…

Day one: leave camp to head to Alamosa to meet up with @POTATO LAUNCHER, @CenTXFJ60 and the rest of the Texas caravan. Packed until I ran out of space.

Met up with the gang and started up to Creede for the last stop until camp for the night. Starting in Alamosa, Norman started running really rough, felt/sounded like a vacuum leak. Mild panic. From Creede to camp she was running mega rough and the skies opened up so I cranked up the defrost and started smelling coolant. Elevated panic ensues. Get to camp sopping wet, tarped up and waited out the storm in Jimmy’s truck.

Next morning after packing up, rolled over to where Casey and Jimmy were wrapping up, truck running like hammered dogshite.

Drumroll please….
Plug wire worked its way off the dissy. Plugged back in and she’s running like a prom queen after a venti quad latte with skim almond milk. So relieved.
Beyond relieved. Did I say relieved?

Day 2: at long last I got to meet my virtual friend Bryan (now a main dude squeeze) @OlYellr. He wasn’t nearly as ugly as I expected so that was a relief. We ran Cinnamon and geeked out like geeks.

That is because I came with beer! (This was from Day 2 on Cinnamon Pass Peak)

You were standing on your rig waiting for me to round the corner with my slow ass rig. Looked like you were starting in a Captain Morgan Rum commercial.

Cheers!

Coming to realize I’m probably not going to do a real trip report on SAS. Returned home from New Mexico friday directly into the maelstrom of my wife planning a multi family yard sale at our place (need an emoji for eyes rolling out of my skull) so that delayed much unpacking until yesterday, so I worked on my soft top install instead.

Essentially, did some fun trails, saw unbelievable terrain, made friends for life, drank my weight in beer and necked some delicious food.

I will do my best to do a write up on the soft top install as I think there should be some words of warning and it deserves a bit of a cautionary tale…

And finally for Bryan @OlYellr
