Hello all, LONG time reader, this maybe my first post in 10 years! I am looking at getting an FJ55 and am in talks to purchase the flying pig.

My big question is who all has dropped/modified new seats (3 point harnesses with pretensioners and headrests) and put them in the rear of the 55 if not that has anyone modified the stock bench to add these items?

I am looking at updating the seats for additional safety for my 1.5 year old and 4.5 year old. They both use boosters currently and I would like them to have pretensioner belts. Also I always plan for the worst and hope for the best so this plus a sport cage on the interior will probably be in the future if talks go well!

I was looking at 3rd row Tahoe/yukon seats from the early 2000s and have found a few silverado front seat "bench" seats that are 2 buckets with a transforming center console for the middle seat. I like the yukon idea better but just exploring options. Chat GPT told me a great option would be from a Chevy uplander width wise but they don't look as good or have full integrated belts like the yukon ones have. I am prioritizing 4 seats with shoulder belts for safety and the 5th is just the occasional use seat.

Lastly I have minimal fabrication experience and I would more than likely hire RCI Offroad a local shop here in Melbourne, FL to do it, that or we have a race shop that specializes in roll cages. Either of these shops would perform the modifications for increased safety and piece of mind.

Has anyone mounted seats and has good words of advice?

Thanks in advance!

Please enjoy this photo of my (now sold to my friend) built 07 V8 4runner next to my dads '94 FJ73 (Fathers day gift we got him 4 years ago).

@smooth swapped in some Ford King Ranch seats front and rear. One of the best looking seat swaps out there

100% agree - those look awesome.

Since you have a fab shop doing the work, you can pick what you want as long as it fits the width. I have used seats in the front with integrated belts in the past - like chebby seats through the last 20 years. I'd suggest browsing the FJ40 forum, litterally 100s of options explored there.

I didn't see any more photos of his rig, does anyone know of any angles from the front seats facing back to see how they look? It looks like 2 buckets to me and not a middle seat, other than that they look damn good!

That's how that thread got bumped!

You got what I have for photos. 3 seater rear bench with center section removed. Search King Raanch seats.
Ahhhh that answers my main question on if it is a 3 seater or not how it is installed! I thought it looked skinny.

Is there a nice looking way to get a 3 seat bench in the back of these or just prioritize seats?

I did not add headrests to the rear seat. Sorry but can try and get pics as it’s still at shop.

We used older f150 seats, same @riderjgs used in his pig. I can get pics of those as I have them in the shop if you wish to see what we did.

Yes please once available post the pictures of how you added the headrests! Thank you!

I couldn't find the thread, but someone did this in the 60 forum years ago. Basically found a doner seat with headrests, disassembled the upper seat and welded in the tubes and structure from the doner.

That sounds like a good solution. I didn't know you could disassemble a seat and farm out the head rest pole sets...!

I have seen the headrest mod done with an Excursion third row as well as those didn’t come with them.

My rig has two offroad bucket seats and 4-point harnesses in the back. I need to switch to a bench to fit all three kids, but I have the same headrest concerns you do. I did see that PRP offers a custom sized rear bench that looks decent and head rests are an option. I will likely go that route.

You can buy new and have your upholstery shop put them in for you. Search for "Bucket Seat Headrests w/Mounting Brackets”
