1999+ OME lifted coils and shocks already in route to me. I need them to set up the front end. Thanks @cruiseroutfit! Adjustable DYI panhard in route too. T-case kit and 80-series birfields headed my way, thanks @wardharris and @orangefj45!

Could not find any upgraded 80-series rotors in the country so I just ordered OEM from the local dealership.

I started setting up the rear axle.

All brake and e-brake parts were organized today and are ready to install tomorrow.

All new rear OME suspension was ordered today, thanks @cruiseroutfit!

The owner informed me today he has a 1940's teardrop trailer in absolutely mint condition, even with original paint. The PZJ70 will be it's main tow truck.

More or less, the panhard determines axle location.

It is laying out beautifully, enjoyable to build.

Next pic is figuring out how much to remove from a 79-series panhard before installing a SLEE adjuster.

And @cruiseroutfit never disappoints! I ordered rear suspension last Friday and it was here today! Oh ya!

All that is left is to weld the coil buckets on the housing, set it down and if I am happy, weld on the frame side brackets for good.

Since the coil bucket is not welded on the panhard is skewed slightly forward, giving it a slight angle difference from the drag link. No worries though since when I weld it on the angle of the dangle will be on the money.

Question, what is the reason again, why you couldn't keep the stock steering setup, where it connects to the top of the knuckle instead of the bottom? Would it hit the panhard?

You are doing a beautiful job BTW, this is something I will be doing in the future, most of the conversion is fairly straight forward, except the added work/cost to transform the knuckles to 80 series, the only purpose seems so that the 80 series steering can be used. Have you explored other options that would allow the 70 steering to remain? I did see you tried to use other steering arms without luck, so I assume this was the easiest route considering?

I thought I mentioned it in this thread, I don’t recall.

I converted an 80 I had to crossover steering (tie rod & drag link in front of the axle) using GM offset one ton tres and Y-link style. Under max compression it touched and was dangerous.

Toyota designed this well in terms of packaging. It all just barely fits.

A person could try to put the Panhard on top of the axle but your Panhard then is going to be substantially shorter than the drag link which you do not want. And everything opens a can of worms. In a coil spring suspension you need the drag link and the Panhard to be on the same angle or plane or it will cause bump steer. So moving the Panhard is not that simple. Plus you can see in the pics not much room under max compression on top of the axle.

I basically built a 1999+ 70-series front axle. When Toyota went coil springs on the 70 they also went bigger knuckles and changed the steering to 80-series style. There is an added benefit with what I have built, the strongest birfields Toyota made for a Cruiser. I am not doing it but you could also upgrade to 100-series front brakes.
