I believe I have solved the riddle. At least for this build and what I am trying to achieve.

80 steering arms won’t work, stud pattern is to large on the knuckle. The pin for the knuckle though is the same size. The trunnion bearings are also larger.

This is the same for 76/78/79 as well accept one thing. The stud pattern for the steering arm on the knuckle is a match to the older 70-series.

So I bought and am using 1999+ 70 steering arms and trunnion bearings on my axle. I am not 100% sure until I get the arms and bearings but I believe all I need to do is machine the bottom of the knuckle ball on the housing to accept the large bearing. Roughly 5mm bigger.

I won’t be keeping the crossover steering.

80-series (and I believe 76/78/79) trunnion bearing size.

5mm to machine out of the knuckle ball to accept the larger bearings should be zero issues. This solves steering to panhard issues since I will be setting this up just like any other coil sprung 70.

Happy to have gotten my hands on these.

Been needing this so I can put the cowl back together.

This is a breather for the fuel tank that goes into the frame rail. It busted removing it, 28yr old hard brittle plastic does that.

Why not a factory dial?

Didn’t feel like. I did do that in my 100. It’s alright but no lights to show they are on.

Ah yes, that makes sense. To do fully a new gauge with the indicators would be needed. I didn’t think about that. Thank you.

Plus independent switches will allow you to lock axles separately ... there are instances where being able to lock the front diff and leave the rear open are nice ....

How much clearance between the spring and tire will you end up with?

Out of curiosity, why not use 80 axels?

Nic,

Here is a picture of an HZJ78 front end. You can see how far out the coil bucket is on the axle. I will be mounting it in the same location.

Spent sometime in the last two days getting the compressor and plasma torch going. Had to get some parts and install them. All good now.

Lots of Cruiser parts...

Housing is mostly cleaned up, little more with the flap disc and all good.

Not saying to much yet but things are changing a bit.

I’m noticing how much of the inner fender I will have to remove for the 80 series shock tower. I thought it would be more.

Yup not much at all. No conflicts on the inside and items mounted to it except the vacuum reservoir in the 4wd system which is super easy to move.

It is laying out beautifully....

So I wanted to look at options more and decide which direction to go before I mention it.

I jumped the gun the other day stating that the 76/78/79 steering arms will bolt on the older 70 knuckles. I had gotten a measurement from a 76 but is must have been a bad measurement. The coil sprung 70’s have a bigger stud spread than the older ones on the knuckles. It does match 80-series though.

As a result I will be welding 80-series knuckle balls on the 70 housing. This so I can use 80 knuckles and steering. The 70 spindle does bolt on the 80 knuckle so I am not sure yet if I am using 70 or 80 outers. It is looking like 80 out from the knuckle. I have not checked yet but if possible I would like to use the 70 inner axle shaft and the 80 outer for the added strength of the 80 birfield.

A machine shop will be turning down the 80 knuckle balls for me next week and also the housing if it needs it. The housing and 80 knuckle balls are at the sand blaster right now.

The only other real issue with this conversion is where the trans mount is on the frame in relation to where the radius arm mount needs to be.

I have gained about 2” in the radius arm mount by coping and trimming it. I still need 1.5” and I don’t want to trim it anymore.

So I will be leaving it where it is and using a set of Delta radius arms that they are making for me which are 1.75” shorter than a stock arm.

Only thing left to work out on the front end is sway bar.

Cheers
