Nice work Onur!I know us single guys always have something on our minds, but i would not encourage this mentality to kids. Paul, I do not mean any disrespect to you, but my oldest nephew of the same name and similar age, I would not phrase it like this.

He's not a kid. He's an adult.

So if anyone has a beater car they are looking to let go let me know.

I have a Porsche 944 with an automatic that I've been trying to sell off and on for quite a while. I used it to commute from Corrales to the airport but no longer work down there so don't need it. PM me if interested.

the quality of being young(er), as in kid brother

Age limits
The age in which a person is considered a "youth", and thus eligible for special treatment under the law and throughout society varies around the world.

"Youth... those persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years." - United Nations General Assembly[6]
"Time in a person's life between childhood and adulthood. The term "youth" in general refers to those who are between the ages of 15 to 25." - World Bank.[7]
The Commonwealth Youth Programme works with "young people (aged 15-29)."[8]
"A person... under 21 years of age." - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration[9]
"People between the ages of 14 and 21." - Wilson School District[10]
"Youth; an individual from 13 through 19 years of age." - Alternative Homes for Youth, Inc[11]
"Youth is defined as any member of society between the ages of 15 and 34" - The Danish Youth Council [12]

Just me, I turned 36 today and I still think I'm a kid.

Something interested happened today I might be able to pick up a 1HZ for not much more than a beater car, so here are my options.

1.Get the 1HZ and swap in over winter break with my H42. I believe this is doable if the 1HZ comes with a H55 bell housing. I would also mount up my aux tank and replace or clean up my current tank. Take care of body work over the summer.

2. Not worry about the 1HZ and get a beater car and start restoration.

3. Get the 1HZ drive the forty and only replace parts that are a must until the summer. Also source a H55 and splitcase.

4. Last option, but unlikely get the 1HZ and a beater car and start restoration now.

Long term plans for the forty are 1HZ, H55, splitcase, aux tank, full restoration, 60 series power steering, drawers in the back, winch, slider steps, rear bumper with quarter protection.

Reason for a 1HZ:
Now: Starter is starting to go, 7mpg, loosing compression and not sure what is going on in my top end, still need to do see what all going on. Comes with power steering pump already.

Future: Way better gas mileage, can run bio-diesel, newer engine, tubro, and cool factor

Opinions?

I'll give you a ring tonight Paul. Couple things:

1). I will talk it over with Kate, but we could probably let you borrow a cruiser. (yes, We own a running cruiser now--a 60)

2). The 1HZ will not work with your H42. The input shaft on the H41/2 doesn't mate with the 1HZ. You could get an H41/2 for a B series diesel and machine the input shaft to work, but I only understand it might work, maybe. 1HZ pretty much means H55f (unless you can make the R151f or H151 work--don't think you can in a 40)

I see the 1HZs you are looking at. That would be a steal if you could trade a bumper for them... Michael at West Coast Cruisers will be all over those, BTW. He may have them spoken for already. Act fast.

There is a huge assumption being made on the 1HZ; it doesn't need any sort of a rebuild. If so, has that been included in the total cost? I'm assuming that the HZ has better BEB's than the HD series engines so this may not be an issue but worth bringing up.

I'm predicting the cost of this adventure easily exceeding $5k in the next two years.

I know, I know, I'm a stick in the mud.

The only reason I thought it might work is because I read about the build in South America about using a H41 with a H55 bell housing. https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/215784-so-begins-my-bj40-frame-off-restoration-18.html Post #345 And I remember our talk about needing a H55 with splitcase, and I would much rather have a 5 over a 4, but if it gets me running.

I should be able to snag one still the issue is getting one with the injector pump, because the two with pumps seem to be much more complete. Also are injector pumps easy to come by otherwise I will just trade for a bumper. I also found out none of the engines have the bell housing. And I know you had to get yours pulled from a hard in OZ.

Dan

We can get brand new H55's anytime. Paul--I talked with your father about this. Got the seed planted.

:)

Excellent, my father seemed happy with the idea of new 5 speed. Question though, if I order a new H55 can I order it with the correct input shaft?

I know, I know, I'm a stick in the mud.

I don't have the clearest picture of the engine. What I do know if the engines have one rebuild on them and where maintained by Toyota.

It is very true that some big money is going to get spent on this project, but I am also looking at this at the end of the day I will have a new drive train. And once I do all the body work I have practically a new car.

More info on the engines. For the complete one which I was looking at it includes a starter, alternator, PS pump, injector pump and are complete but the exhaust was cut as is typical with these. The engines were rebuilt at a set hour point which I was told by the fleet mechanic was around the mathematical equivalent of 200,000KM in hours. The trucks have a hour meter. Oil was changed regularly and the Toyota dealer in CDA, ID handled the maintenance of belts, hoses, tune-ups etc. All of the engines are from 1998 or newer so they are considered the best 1HZ engines around. And the owner has heard and seen the two engines I am looking at run.

I should have my engine in the next couple of weeks. It is being crated up right now.

It is now time to start sourcing in parts to get it ready to swap in. I am going to be picking these parts up through the spring and then fingers crossed swap in over the summer. If there is a chance I might do body as well during the summer, but I want the engine in first. This works well, so I can pay for pieces once I have money for them. I also plan on keeping this 40 for a long time after doing this swap.

Air filter
H55
H55 Input Shaft for 1HZ
Clutch
Splitcase Transfercase
Drive Shafts 60 Series
Drive Shaft Flanges
Fuel Filter
Bell housing
Flywheel
Exhaust
Motor Mounts
60 Series Transmission Member
Power Steering

It should be a lot of fun and by the end of it a HZJ40 will be born. :D

I found the p/n for a H55 for the 1HZ and the correct bellhousing and working on the others.

I have a question though for those who did the H55 swap do I have to get a new shift lever?

Order it from Dan.

Echo, order from Dan.

Of course I will order it from Dan. Onur has been a big help checking numbers for me as well.

I just put on a new clutch slave cylinder and the FSM isn't extremely clear to me. I am just making sure what I am trying to measure is the amount of movement from my clutch fork until it disengages my pressure plate from the clutch. Am I understanding that correctly. I tried search, but that gave several answers, but not a rock solid one.

Thanks

Paul:

My FSM for my 73 shows 1-7mm pedal free play.

And quoted from the FSM "Turn the release cylinder push rod adjuster so that the release fork will have the specified play at its end" Then shows a diagram and specifies 4-6mm play.

I have kinda quiet do to school, but that doesn't mean this project was fallen to the way side. My 1HZ has been sitting in my garage for about a week now, and I can't wait to stick it in, but that requires more parts to be had, which are being researched.

Along with that I am done with school in a week and then have a month off. I plan on welding up an engine cradle for it. That will also be my first welding project, which I am excited for. Also over break I am doing my power steering and chasing some electrical gremlins.

I also started a build thread in the diesel section, but will be updating this one as I go along as well.

Sounds great Paul. Glad to hear that you have your engine and are moving forward. Keep us posted. It's fun to watch these projects come together. Maybe a snow run in the diesel 40 later in the season?

Sadly, the engine won't be in my forty until the summer, unless I get a rolling chassis or a even just a frame. But mostly diffidently I snow run once my power steering is in.

However, to be doing this I need a car to get to school. So if anyone has a beater car they are looking to let go let me know. I am looking at the 2k mark and solely just reliable and not a jeep. I don't care if is purple and has zebra print seats and a dent in all of the doors.

Paul,

Did you ever find a beater car? I know someone selling a $1,500 1996 Maxima. High miles and fair condition but it runs well.
