Ended up biting the bullet and purchasing an upper dash pad. Took a chance and ordered it from a seller on eBay from Dubai (dxbwolf). It was more than a $100 bucks cheaper then any other source that I could find. It arrived in about a week!.

Also threw on some oem hubcaps. Not sure how I feel about them yet. They seem too shiny and new.

After reading some of the horror stories of the original metal fan I decided to upgrade to the plastic type. I bought a spacer from SOR and installed it. It was VERY close to the bottom of the fan shroud. If I flexed the radiator I could actually make it clip it just barely. I had to get under there and bend it away a bit. Seems better now but I’ll probably keep an eye out for a 2F fan shroud and replace it eventually.

I also ordered a new set of battery cables from @Fourrunner. Really well made. I’m happy that I decided to upgrade my old fraying ones.

Picked up a HFS bumper with a Warn 8274 winch from @stoshzack this past weekend. Really nice guy and I couldn't be happier with the bumper/winch. After trying to figure out how to transport it up to NJ from NC I decided to just rent a car and drive it back since I happened to be in his area visiting some friends. My back is still recovering from the seats in the Kia Soul that I rented.

Next up:
1. Replace rear brake pads with ceramic ones so that I can dial in the proportioning valve better.
2. Instead of waiting for the local guy to take care of the rust/patch panels I may just practice and do it myself.
3. Really thinking about OME suspension 🦘.
4. Figure out how to move to North Carolina.

We need updates.

I've just been driving it when I can but nothing really new done to it lately. Mechanically it is pretty much complete for what I wanted to get done with the exception of an OME suspension but I have to hold off on purchasing that for now. 💰

Addressing the body rust is the real challenge now. The local welder/body guy just doesn't seem up to the task and keeps pushing it off. I really want to tackle it myself, since I already have the replacement body pieces, but I'm really afraid of messing it up (I am king of the booger weld). I may try to find somebody locally that knows what they are doing and can work out of my garage with me. At least to a point where I feel comfortable enough to do the rest on my own.

It was strange that from mid march until mid may we were basically stuck at home for the most part because of coronavirus and I hardly worked on pork roll. Time to get back to it and come up with a plan on getting the bodywork done.

I can't believe that it's been almost 3 years since I updated this thread. Not much has been done to be honest since then. Just been using it as is. I got sidetracked with a home renovation and a couple of other projects (bmw e39 m5 and mk5 gti).

I always seem to have some oddball stuff happen me. I had it sitting outside in my driveway for a few months while I was working on something else in the garage. I went to sort it out and get ready for the summer and noticed that the oil was milky. I honestly thought the worst and figured it was the head gasket, although the coolant level was normal and looked fine. It turns out that rain water was entering the split in the hood, dipping down the side of the valve cover and entered the engine through the top of the side cover 🤯 I changed the oil a couple of times until it was clear, siliconed the split in the hood and will reattach the side cover once my new gasket comes in. Thank god it was only that.

Also, the float in my carb seems to be allowing fuel to drain out. I'm probably going to send it back out to @FJ40Jim for another rebuild. In the meantime I just threw on a cheap-o carb from amazon. So far so good with it.

My other projects are winding down for now so I'm going to try to tackle the rust/welding on the rear over the next couple of months. I'll be sure to post up some updates. So happy to be back and working on the 40 again!

Finally tackled the rear sill and quarter panel rust! This is the first time that I have the rear has been completely assembled. Still have a couple of rust spots on the side but those will be easy to tackle after this undertaking. Going to enjoy it as is for the next couple of summer months and then work on the hardtop this fall.

Bought a cheap-o harbor freight flux core welder. It was good enough to get the job done. Definitely learned a lot in the process.

Wow! Great job.

For the first time in a long time I put the hardtop back on. It needed some work so I got busy. Needed to weld a few spots on the metal gutter, patch up the fibergalss, repaint and put a new headliner in. Definitely not perfect but decent for the amount of time invested. Also installed all new rubber seals.

This is really the first year that I'm using Pork Roll in the winter. So I really never worked on setting up the heaters and other creature comforts.

Bought some $17 2.5" defroster tubing and rigged it up. Fits well and seems to be the cheapest option that I could find. Hopefully it will help somebody else.

Cleaned up and installed the rear heater as well.

Also found a couple of odds and ends that I must have purchased a while back. A new battery tray and refurbed transfer case linkage.

Installed some interior lighting connected up to the oem dash pull switch. The dash hole was already put there by the PO so I just stuck that light on there with some 3m tape. Also put a led strip light up on the headliner. So nice to be able to light up the whole interior now. Totally reversible and nothing permanent but helps a lot.

Also was able to do some Chipotle parking lot off-roading :)
