Hey Guys

Sharing the news for the new product that Powerbrake just came out with, now in stock here in the US.

The previous big brake kit for the 80 Series would only suit 17" or larger wheels to clear the large size of the bigger 6-Piston calipers they run. They have come up with a new smaller sized 6-Piston caliper now so that they can cater to other 4x4's with 16" wheels as standard (70's, LR Defenders, etc), so this will help broaden the product range. These use a 13" rotor now instead of the 13.7" that the other kit uses. Note: Some OEM wheels have a very tight offset and could still make contact with the calipers, so wheel spacers may be necessary.

  • This is the kit for 16″ Wheels. There’s a different bigger kit for 17″+ wheels
  • Powerbrake will be adding small wheel spacers to help fit some OEM wheels with very tight clearances
  • Some OEM wheels may still require a wheel spacer for proper caliper clearance
  • X-Line billet 6-piston off-road calipers (pair)
  • High-performance brake pads, pre-loaded into the calipers
  • 2-Piece 13″ 72-vane rotors
  • Semi-float disc drive system allows for radial disc expansion and contraction
  • Curved, directional cooling vanes
  • Billet caliper mounting brackets
  • Stainless steel braided brake lines
  • Provided brake lines connect the caliper to the axle housing, then extended brake lines (sold separately) can be used as well for taller lift kits, connecting from the axle to the frame
  • All necessary mounting hardware for quick, easy bolt-on installation
  • Comprehensive fitment and bed-in instructions
  • Now Includes Upgraded Powerbrake Pads, PB05 Compound – highest level 4×4 brake pads available – made in Japan
  • Manufactured, finished and packaged 100% in South Africa
  • Calipers are offered Red Anodized, or Grey Hard Anodized

Caliper Maximum Temperature Recording (MTR) System

All Powerbrake X-Line 4×4 calipers feature our MTR system. The system provides a permanent record of the maximum operating temperature reached by the caliper. Feedback from our R-Line race customers has been extremely positive with regards to the MTR system over the years. We therefore decided to apply this same technology to our X-Line 4×4 calipers. Customers will really appreciate this feature as it provides valuable data in the support of brake fluid choice etc. The inclusion of a Max Temp Recording system on civilian big brake kit range at no extra charge is unique to Powerbrake on the world market.

I can't say enough good things about the Powerbrake Big Brake Kit. I have the kit for 17+" wheels and it is absolutely amazing how well my truck on 37" tires stops. I've had them for 2+ years and they work like the day it was installed. Yes, it's pricey, but nothing about this truck isn't.

This looks awesome! I really like my stock 80 (and LX450) wheel sets...happy to see a real BB kit that keeps my OEM wheels running on 315's. Right off from the pics, just the pad size alone looks like 30%+ more than the size of OEM.

One more thing to start budgeting for! :wrench: :wrench: :wrench:

There is no dust boots on the pistons. Why?
Good question!!

Here's the answer right from Powerbrake.

Over the years, we did a lot of testing on the Toyota Motorsport Dakar rally trucks and 4WD trucks with larger tires, what we found that the dust boots do not manage temperature well at all - they crumble, crack and break away and this is really a problem for allowing sand, dirt particles and muck in towards the pressure seal. So every Powerbrake piston and every caliper piston pod has an “Internal Wiper Seal” it sits about 3mm inside the caliper and it will not get damaged so it will not break up and that means we consistently are protecting the pressure seal. This is the difference on our brake system because we design the caliper from the ground up for 4WD applications these details are taken into account verses other companies that repurpose street performance calipers for 4x4 applications.

The timing on this is incredible, I've been struggling to find a 17" wheel for my 80 series to address the brakes/weight I'll be adding as I begin the build. Keeping the factory 16's is much preferred, I'll definitely have to add these to the list.

Yeah, I didn't realize how much of an effect it was having on people, requiring the 17" wheel size. I guess Powerbrake heard about it a lot more often than I did.

That answer sounds a bit BS-y to me. The boot is there to protect the piston, not the seals. adding a wiper doesn't protect the piston.

Piston boots keep crud from building up on the pistons. In a racing application where lower weight, max effort, high temperatures and short lifespan are the norm I can see no reason for piston boots. For a daily driver type application I see it as something that reduces longevity.

I wish they'd do the same and give us a 17" kit for the 200's as well! Either way, the 80 needed this bad, I'm looking forward to this upgrade.

Maybe I missed something about these kits to increase braking performance, but what about the rear brakes??

You didn't miss it, they don't offer a rear upgrade for the 80's.

For the front, there's the 2 different size X-Line big brake kits, and the D-line rotor and pad kit, but they don't offer a rear option.

Thank you.
Is there an upgrade kit for the rear ?
…Is one needed?

I looked into the smaller kit for the 16" oem and tried the provided template for fitment. Delon Murphy of Powerbrake said a 3-5mm spacer/shim would be required for clearance and would be included in the brake kit for the 16" oem to fully clear the calipers. This was months ago so maybe they've changed some things and no spacer is necessary. Either way, it looks like a great product. @ChargedSHOTaco has some good feedback in an earlier powerbrake thread and was helpful getting me some feedback. here POWERBRAKE’S X6S BIG BRAKE KIT W/ 6 PISTON CALIPERS - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/powerbrakes-x6s-big-brake-kit-w-6-piston-calipers.1307821/#post-15361950

I ended up going with a larger wheel and went with the larger kit. Should be done this fall. Very excited to see how it performs.

Any reason why there's not a rear brake option? Also, is there any sort of performance difference between the set that requires 17" vs. the 16"?

The D-Line lineup just came out last year, so they haven't come out with all possible options yet. There are no BBK's for rear ends, as it's too complex to redo the parking brake and caliper, as well as a larger rotor.

Yes, the 17's use a larger rotor and caliper, so there will be increased braking from those.

Here's the two templates you can print at 100%, cut out and then check for fitment. When I tried fitment the larger brake kit was clearly too large for the 16"oem, but 17" and 18" easily seemed to clear the calipers.

What about replacement wear and tear items down the line? I don't see where the rotor discs or pads are listed separately or their cross referenceable part numbers provided. If I can get comfortable with ling-term service parts, I'd be game to try to set on my rig.

They're all stocked in Charlotte. We don't list all the replacement parts online.
