Here's the page on the Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage site where the 1960's TV advertisment claims you can cruise "85mph all day long" on the open road with the F135 powered FJ40.

I have no doubt that's true. I certainly make that easily in my truck, although it's most comfortable in the longer wheel based FJ45.

That said, there's what you can do, and what you should do, and Andrew is correct that it really doesn't feel safe to go that fast in an FJ40.

I've had mine up to ~85. It's more comfortable rpm wise about 70 and drives great.

Bone stock 64:grinpimp:

I just had it out this weekend for a mild run in the hills and a nice highway drive back home.

I drove mine at 75 for over a hundred miles going to montana once but is been lenthened and widened;) Wife starts complaining at around 85 or so.....messes up her hair hehe:grinpimp:

F'n faster than I want to take it... I've pushed it to 80 before, will probably go 100 though. Cruise at 60 mostly, mainly due to the price of gas..

Chevy SB 350 ZZ4, SM420, Ranger OD, 3" body lift, 3" suspension lift, steering correciton kit, 35" BFG M/T.

60 with the windshield down. The bugs hurt above that.

Top speed: 70 mph. I thought I was doing great in my '73 F-engine, 3-speed. People pass me all the time, but I don't really give a hoot:flipoff2:

Cruises @ 70-75 easily under 2500 rpm, Took it up to 90 once and the wind shield started to peel out of the frame.

Looks like it just depends on how big your balls are and how you are set up.

Is that the same ad that says you can drive around w/ "7 husky men" in your 40?

My '78 has 4:11 and 33's. I run ~70 MPH over to Moab and back. I don't like how it sounds much higher. THe tach is showing ~3k RPM @ 70 MPH.

Dave is wishing he could drive around with "7 husky men".:D Can you imagine 85 mph and all that weight? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

I would have to say that my 70 FJ40 is comfortable at 70 miles per hour. I don't have a speedometer cable but the cop wrote 70 MPH on the ticket.
My 74 FJ40 is comfortable up to about 62 MPH.

Geesh sounds like a lot of fast 40s out there.

My stock 77 with 31" BFGs really doesn't like to do more that 55-60 mph which pretty much makes it useless on the Southernn California Audobon aka the San Diego Freeway.....:)

Top speed? I've cruised at 80 mph and had no desire to go faster. It feels like it has plenty left. I bet it would run 95 with a crazy sumbitch behind the wheel.

I'll second that, I run around a 33" tire 1978, with 4.11's and a carbed 2F. I "land cruise" at 55-65 not problem. It will go faster but the speedo is off quite a bit. If I drop the hammer it will do 75 no problem but with a rusty old bucket and factory roll bar 65 mph is plenty fast. I have a Triumph and a Ducati for going fast, the truck is for what the name implies "land cruising".

Hey it goes up 100 mph on the speedo!!! maybe off the edge of a cliff... God only knows how many times I've threatened to drive it off of one!

This is really an arbitrary question. I guess it depends on gearing, power available and how big of balls/common sense one has. I spent 25 years trying to see how I could break things and now try to see how long I can make something last. These aren't race cars, they're +30 year old vehicles that were made to be very utilitarian...and are as aerodynamic as a barn door. 33's, 3:70's, 350 SBC and +5degrees caster and I can keep up with 75-80MPH traffic and probably a lot more but WHY?

BJ42 with a stock 3B, 4.88R&P, on 255/85 (33.5") tire. higher then 70 is pushing it, i guess i could reach 75mph. but i'm usually around 65-70mph. Like alot said patience will get you up the speed.... I could do a bit faster with the stock 4.11, but temp would be higher and harder to keep the speed, wind or grade and i'd be struggle with 4.11, the 4,88 and larger exhaust help alot. Speeds registered with GPS.

I'm with you brother...Why go fast? Enjoy the slow lane.
