If anyone wants one of the 5 speed covers, it would probably end up about $1200 shipped to your door in the USA. A little less depending on how many other parts coming in to share the shipping costs to get them over to me. I'll have one in hand in a few weeks and I'm told my contact can get 4 or 5 more for sure.

@OGBeno do you have listings for a H55F back to 1976? I have never heard of a listing before 10/82. If it was a proto I could under stand. I have a 76 that I'm convinced was a proto type (not with a H55F) with a M42 transmission installed. But I sure you will not find a listing for that transmission/transfer case setup.

The three pictures in the first post the center one looks like a four speed. No extension and the tailshaft is too short for an H55F. Other two pictures look the bolt on shift tower looks like they been modified. Hard to tell with so much glossy black paint but appears them have new welds on them.

I think this data plate has come up before in past H55F discussions.

I’m not in a position currently to research anything associated with this (out on the Arizona Trail hiking).

But when it comes to transmissions, I defer to Georg @orangefj45 always.

FWIW, we have a few of the “modified” FJ40 aluminum H55F top covers in stock.

We also have new OEM 60-series top covers and used OEM 40-series top covers.

@Living in the Past as mentioned earlier, the pics I posted are the ( what I believe to be OEM Toyota, could be Bandeirante ) cast iron top cover ( which I own ) bolted to an H55F ( 3-year old unit we bought new from Toyota ) with the 19-spline output shaft.
I purchased this cover in the Middle East a couple of years ago. The covers mentioned by the OP are also located in that general area. That makes me doubt their Bandeirantes since it’s a long way from Brazil.
I bolted that cover on strictly as proof-of-concept.
There is no safety provision to keep the operator from shifting from R to 5th or vise-versa other than common sense.

When in reverse going directly in a forward gear is not the problem because hopefully your stopped when doing this. It's driving in fifth gear speeds and slipping in to reverse is when things could get exciting.

I am really interested if these covers were produced by Toyota and installed at the factory. Wouldn't rule out Bandeirante. No H55F transmissions were installed in the Land Cruisers shipped to US by Toyota. Look how many have made their way to the US. I Have no idea how many 40 series top covers are now in the US but obviously the numbers are continuing to grow. To convert a four speed cover to the five version would not be that, especially if you not concerned about the reverse safety.

I would be interested in a sixteen spline output shaft on a H55F that bolts to a one piece transfer case.

Do find it interesting why these covers and H55F made in 1976 haven't been disgusted on Mud before. The full time 4WD I find on Mud back to 2004. On a LC list prior to that back to 1998. I heard about these back in at least 1996. As far as I know only two of these FJ40s are know to have ever been found.

how would this be different than an H55 with 5th right and up and reverse being right and lower
they are right above each other??

this would mess with someone trying to steal the rig, being in 5th and thinking it was in 1st

we had some older semis at at work that had odd shift patterns, always forgot about the pattern until going down the road

The aluminum cover has a lock that requires moving the shift cane in neutral between third and four gear before going into reverse. You can't just slide it straight down outt of fifth gear and into reverse. Cast iron cover allows this according to Georg.

Doubt you could get the shifter into reverse coming out of fifth gear just a bunch of grinding.
Shift pattern is goofy.

On the plus side height is the same as four speed. 1/79+ would just need to move the hand brake the axle.
Four speed shift cane would work no need for the five speed cane.
Shifter says in the correct location for the 40 series which was a must for me.

Two more of these tops in the US now.
