I'm with you brother...Why go fast? Enjoy the slow lane.

Yes, i have learned to live life in the slow lane.:)

I have run 70 (w/GPS) up to Vedauwoo (85 miles) and that was fast enough for me. It had more, in fact I pushed it to 80 a couple times. The temp gauge barely left the 1/3 mark. Sounded like a small 4cyl. I'd rather run 45-55 cruising smaller highways and roads and take my time. At 45mph, mine locks up all 4 and squeals a couple seconds before stopping - not fun in a 40. Can't imagine the higher RPMs on a stock equipped 40 would be like at 80 on the speedo.

Stock 2F
4.11s
285/75-16s
4in lift
67,000 miles

90-100. Somewhere in there was to busy hold it together to pay attention to the speedo.

Cruised for 10hrs at 75 going to OBX. No problems.

35s and a tired 2f with stock gears and a weber dumping fuel faster than I could pay.

My DD stock 1981 BJ40 with 3L B and 4 spd - max 100 km/hr (my crusier tend to vibrate a bit at that spd..) its life in the slow lane.. :D

I guess I get the record!

the record for the slowest! I have a ford 302 going into ours, but currently the block is sitting in the back of the tub.;) with no engine in the engine bay, it does zero mph all day long.

I like the NTPA (national tractor pulling association) sticker. I do not like the lowrider look:) Plans for a SOA?

Everything on our little project in that photo is exactly how it arrived at my door step! Haven't done a thing to it yet! But definitily want to do a SOA (shackle hangers have already been reversed by P.O) Thinking of maxing out the tire size to 35" at the largest (going to me my son's daily commuter and weekend rig).

Not sure if the NTPA sticker is going to stay or not:D but the body for the most part is in pretty good shape, but the paint will be redone, hard top, etc, etc.

Now that the motor is home again, I am hoping to be able to start building it up, but I have a few other projects that are higher priority currently

Original Poster: didn't mean to throw your thread off topic, sorry about that!

With the exception of a hot-rodded Impala in my youth, most of my cars have been kinda pokey. A/C VW's, Morris Minor, Volvo 122... I've discovered it's a whole lot more fun to enjoy the trip as well as the destination.

That being said, I had my '71 Fj40 up to about 70 once. Felt like I was just hanging on for the ride, praying I wouldn't have to touch the all-drum brakes:skull:.... 45-55 is waaaay better for me.

I don't take highways much....

Grand Prix Cruisers are Overseas

Interesting .....
My '83 FJ40 overseas model (Saudi) came with a owners manual that warns "do not exceed 100 kph / 62 mph" - for only the first 1000 km.

My friend cruises down the highway in his '84 FJ40 @ 125 kph.

The same owners manual says 4th gear is good for (drum role) a whopping 144 kph / 89 mph.

I've only had it up to about 125 kph, and it is noisy but steady.
But hey, I never leave camp with it and the on camp max speed is 80 kph.

Off camp in the dunes, I use my wife's 1999, 225 hp Mitsubishi Pajero, with factory center diff and rear diff lockers - the same beast that wins the Paris / Dakar races.

The Australia specs say max speed in high gear is 140 kph / 87 mph.

And the fastest of them all (all this according to my owners manual) is the Europa spec FJ @ 149 kph / 93 mph.

cheers

I run mine easely over 75 but it a little scarier, 70 is fine with my 36" Swamper SX, the 2F is just getting rebuilt with a rv grind cam, .030" bored, head is shaved .025" , the block is deked .020" and run domed piston, with a 4 speed and 4.56 in the pumpkins.
