I have a 1977 FJ-55 with stock driveline that is going to be getting a 81 Mosley Motors 2F and Valley Hybrids H55/Split Case

Questions for those that have swapped new drivelines into FJ55s

On the engine. I would love to ditch the loud ass fixed plastic fan for one with a clutch but there is not much room between the water pump and the stock radiator. @cruiseroutfit ?

As y’all know having a good Pig radiator and shroud is not something I’m wanting to mess with.

If anyone has made this upgrade, what parts did you use?

Second question.

I would love to get a head start on the driveshaft modifications as well.

Does anyone have this same setup in their pig? If so, could I trouble you for some driveshaft measurements?

I can source some FJ60 shafts and have them modded and slip the 55 yokes on the differential end.

Third....I am planning on reusing my 1977 bellhousing and hanging this 55/split combo off the back without a crossmember. When I was building Patina @FJ40Jim said this was acceptable (after I had built a crossmember out of a FJ60 crossmember)

But I’m interested to hear how you did it. Looks like I’ll have to redo my new muffler if I have to use a crossmember.

Last, I am planning on using a 60 series AC style motor mount and 3 toe harmonic balancer for future AC addition. Will this mount fit in the pig bay? Looks like it will from just looking in there but if you have done it let me know.

What am I missing?

Snap a quick pic of your current pump/fan and I can get you set up

For the radiator/cooling, is going electric out of the question?

I recently dropped an Intrepid fan with DC Controller unit in my S10 and so far, it is pretty impressive. I stole the parts from my brown 55 and now I'm thinking of going that route again:oops:

Yes. 100%. I love the cooling system with a Land Cruiser. Not gonna add another something to worry with.

The fixed metal and plastic fans are stupid Loud. My 40 and 60 have clutch fans and they are so much quieter.

I can only chime in on the a/c mount. I installed one on my engine swap with no fitment issues. I'm interested in your fan blade set up though. I reinstalled the plastic fixed blade on mine, basically because I had one. I never thought about the noise issue though. It sheds light on one reason why my buddy's 60 runs so much quieter than mine.

I’ve been banging my head over the engine noise coming off the 55 and it just makes sense that is one of the major causes.

I was trying to figure out why my friends FJ40 was so much louder than my 40 and that was the only major difference.

Fan clutch plus some sound proof on the underside of the hood will likely make a huge difference

You'll want to fab or buy a rear mount. I tried running without one = decided for strength and vibration to add a mount - bought one - but the e4nded up fabing one,

Good feedback. It was pretty easy to incorporate a 60 crossmember to my 40. I should be able to replicate it on the 55.

Water pump: when you say no oil cooler, that doesn’t clear up fan clutch or not?

Your current setup style water pump, with or without oil cooler won’t accommodate a fan clutch. Maybe in an FJ40 engine bay, but not fj55.

Technically, the only fj55 with a fan clutch from the factory was 79, with a thin two core radiator.

Motor mount with a/c:
As mentioned, should fit. Might need to look into the fj60 coolant pipe though

Thanks. Great Info.

That’s what Kurt is going to try to find. Some combo that might fit in that space. Knew it was not stock but if we could find one to work that’s a bonus

Is there a specific FJ55 2F water pump?

I’m trying to figure out what the difference would be.

The one I bought was a 1977 replacement that does not have the separate water port for the oil cooler but it was just for 2F. Not 55 specific.

Sure seems like there is space here to make one work.

I trust @cruiserbrett when he says the above.

Too bad, I was going to chime in that I got the 3FE clutch fan to work in my engine bay, but it was also attached to a 3FE. That might be more work than you want to take on for a clutch fan...

I did shift the radiator forward in the mounts to buy a little more room. No shroud - so far, so good!

I will be following this closely as I would love to go H55 in my Pig. Does your '77 bell housing have the rear mounts?

It does.

I realize my current water pump won’t have the proper holes for a fan clutch but the new one I ordered does. @FJ60Cam used the same one when converting a F equipped FJ40 to 2F

It’s just about room I am guessing.

Like I said I’ve got 9” from the front of the motor to the radiator.

I need to have a few minutes to pull pumps, clutches and fans. We don't stock any of the pulley's so that might be a hangup.

What I'll do is sort something like this:
Fan Blade & Clutch Tech for BJ7x with 3B/13BT (A440F & H55F Models)

If you have 9" I think we have a combo that will fit BUT the pulley might not align with your crank pulley.

So, the new motor going into the Pig is a 1981 motor with 3 row harmonic balancer. Nothing about the motor is FJ55 specific.

@cruiseroutfit wpt-063 is the pump we got.

If you can stack the fan clutch and fan on one of these pumps and get a depth measurement please.

I pulled around my 1968 fj40 with a 1984 2F to pull the fan clutch numbers.

From the front of the block to the radiator is 9.5”

I have the 60 series fan and fan clutch on the truck.

I have 1.5” from the front of the fan to the radiator. (We had to grind down the ends of the fan to fit inside the 40 shroud)

Looking at my numbers on the FJ55 if I use the exact setup I’ll have 1” from the fan to the radiator which should be fine.

1/2” clearance from fan to the belt

Fj55 radiator to block distance tighter as you noted. With your water pump, meant for a fan clutch, you should be able to squeeze it in there. I ended up not going this route on a project a while back because it’s *so* close.

Not fan blades touch the radiator close, but b/c I couldn’t take the fan and clutch off the water pump studs, or get a fan belt off. For me, It really wasn’t worth the trouble at the time.

Caveat: Kurt may have a fan blade that sits deeper on the fan clutch than I had available at the time(later fj40 fan with clutch), which might buy you 1/4” to 3/8” which would have been just enough.

I would keep in mind the fan blade to crank pulley clearance. It gets tight.
