Another week of additional work on peaches up here in “the valley.” Got installed a cap-n-rotor, as well as the ignition coil. Also, caved in and reluctantly installed the 62 sideview mirrors. Regrettably, they are awesomer. Tomorrow, I will be spending Jesus’ birthday putting peaches through hell out on some off-roading trails.

May or may not be logging in this adventure pictorially, but that shouldn’t matter to you, you should also spend that time getting some for yourself.

Did some light wheel east of Patagonia Lake and attempted to make my way to Parker canyon this past weekend. While out in the country, a green and while SUV was off in the distance, and as any Mexican knows, that ain’t a good sign. So I tried to dodge this “migra” agent, but realized my sudden detour was a dead end. As I tried to double back to the main trail, I reversed into an embankment, and peaches sounded awful. Miraculously, the Migra agent caught up to me and was kind enough to pull out his baton, and not use it on me! The issues was dirt getting packed into the tailpipe, which the migra cleared out using his beaner-beater. Also, miraculously, he let us go on our merry way without asking for proof of citizenship!

regretably, as we mosied on down the road, the sounds of disruption became increasingly evident, and lo and behold, my 3 point turn attempt resulted in tailpipe oragami! So I jiggled and wiggled the last bit of tailpipe and above is the end result of what can be called, a Mexican tailpipe delete mod.

More to come.

Ciao

Edgar, you need to see "the man" about getting funding for a new tailpipe. Glad the green and white let you go.

Back with another update for Peaches. This time I did some cosmetic touch ups:

the dash was a slightly damaged as shown above, so Alvis said could grab the dash from a project 60 sitting on his LC Farm. After disassembly, we made the executive decision to install new stereo (not oem), speakers, and fix the d/s door since it was not opening from outside.

the local Pep Boys came in clutch with these Kenwood speakers that fit perfectly into the oem holes. A few new drill holes and boom: smooth sounds.

after the speakers and sound system was installed, we buttoned up the dash pad, which looks way better, but was painted black. 1st world problems.
While I was in an interior mood, I graduated from using rubber grammets to hole up the tired and old rear shocks for some new shocks:

lastly, while working on the brackets to hold the new stereo in place, I used a steel pipe to straighten out the previous brackets and had a bit of an accident. I yelped like suicide bomber, but these land cruisers take blood, sweat and tears

Damn son! Gnarly...

@Dimples , Healing like a lizard!

Just ordered a desmog kit from Man-Im-Free and water pump from Rock-Auto. Write up coming soon.

Ciao

"Yelped like a suicide bomber"- maybe too manly a description. My first hand (no pun intended) recollection was more like wail of a quinceanera princess who lost her boyfriend to her best friend. All the dogs ran for cover, even the hookers moved down the street because the screams were bad for business.

Glad to know you are healing in a reptilian manner.

Great write up!
And nice looking rig that patinar is very nice on that truck.
Keep up the good work!

your smog pump seizing was the reason I decided to purchase a desmog kit. Wouldn't want it to shut my whole powerplant down
I would desmog it but I'm in CA!
And just don't want to hassle trying to smog it bye other means.

Back again with an update!

This weekend I arrived in the "Valley of the Sun" for a desmog, as well as waterpump/front main seal replacement.

This is the clusterclunk that was on my beautiful motor prior to disassembly. Obviously very ugly, and not surprisingly, probably wrong. The vacuum line wiring was such a headache, with the rat's nest of hoses, and Arizona desert dust powdering the engine bay like an 80's disco party.

I will not bore you with the details of disassembly, as it is straightforward. This is the timing cover of the 2F engine, has gears, as opossed to belts or chains. Mr. Toyoda asks for inch/pounds when tightening these bolts. PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!
Failure to do so could potentially lead to removing spare replacement bolts off a previously unmolested original 2F motor from an FJ40 (sorry Jeff).

It is very nice, and recommended by myself, to assemble all these vital components with the radiator off. One thing we did differently here was bypassing the Water hose relay that runs under the motor for the Oil Cooler. Also, please take note of how nicely the claps are facing outward. This will work wonders for times when you really need to get to the water pump later (these instructions are for the very inept)...

The Gasket on the left is from the package I received from my RockAuto AISIN Water pump. As you can see, it encompasses the outer area of the actual waterpump. What this gasket fails to take into consideration is that there is a split in the block, which, if installed, will cause water to spill out of the top of the water pump like a dag-nab YelloStone Gayser! The gasket on the right is the appropriate gasket that you should use. If you take anything away from my stupid post, please let this be it!

There are several posts about a How-To regarding the desmog. I will save you the stress of having to read an aggrevating write up from an amateur who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. One complaint I do have, however, is that Man-A-Fre does not include a pulley tensioner bolt. You would imagine that for $229 you would get that, right? Man-A-Fre are the type of people who will put it in your behind and not have the common courtesy to give you a reach around. SAD. We had to complete a "chicanada", wherein we used a smaller bolt as an immediate solution. If you have a solution and/or alternative to this, please post it below. The tensioner bolt from the previous smog pump got all goofed up when attempting to screw in the pulley hole.

I also completed a good old fashioned oil change. Please note my Grafitti on the filter. It indicates the date, as well as the mileage of the motor at time of change. I also tagged up the water pump. We also added a new fuel line with Green Hose. Neat.

Lastly, I wont be needing this googly-gop. Making a trip to the recycle bin to toss all this unneeded, perfectly functional smog equipment. Glad to see it go in the garbage. See you hell, Global Warming.

Pay attention to any weird noises coming from that desmog pulley. I have the exact same kit and after a year and 10k miles the bearing sounds like it's life will end soon. Don't remember what I did for the tensioner bolt, I'll have to look. Not very impressed with this kit.

"Saludos amigo, de alguien de Puerto Rico"

If all that smog stuff is still functioning you can sell it in the Classified section. A lot of that stuff is unobtainium and
folks that still have to smog their trucks will gladly purchase these items.

@Garrissey i am in agreement with Ben Garcia, sell the smog parts on the classified section and recoup some much needed dinero.

So how does it feel now that the motor can breath and you have full advance?

@Saddletramp, I could never toss that aluminum GOLD!

It runs great, accelerating at a higher rate, but will need to be gone through more thoroughly. We wrapped up at 9pm on Sunday, and rushed home to the Ball-N-Chain. New CityRacer Distributor will be ordered soon. Gotta get all these things wrapped up quickly. Got a little Cruiser on the way. Once that happens, Funds for Peaches will be slim!

The city racer isn’t a drop in. I thought about that but I found a used 60 series 2F distributor for about $100 and send it to be recurves for $120 with JimC.

Worth it. The ability to run a normal timing curve and 10* initial woke the truck up a ton.
