Maybe this is the place to ask, maybe not...
Has anyone else noticed that their steering seems to be pretty sloppy with the hubs unlocked vs. locked? I'm sure I need to rebuild my gear box, but still.
I've also noticed that the firmness of my brakes is better with the hubs locked.

Another thing with the AVM's I noticed that the hub flange is iirc 2mm thinner than the factory one. I didn't realize this until after I stripped a handful of new oem studs.. So I run two washers and I still can't reach 26#tq on them as they have that 'feel' like the threads are about to let go.

Any input guys?

Get aisins. They aren't super expensive.

They've always been something I have planned on getting. I just wasn't sure if these were characteristics of being Part-timed or the cheap hubs.
I had no knowledge of AVM quality until I took them off my BJ40. They basically fell apart in my hand. Since AVM does come in a part time package from some places it does qualify for part time on the cheap. You can always find a set of used Aisin that can be rebuilt easily.

can someone please clarify how the cdl switch works with front locking hubs? I have a stock 92 with cdl switch, no locking diffs.

It will function the same as before right? except in 2wd it is non-functional b/c there are no fwd to transfer power to, right?

I read above somewhere (long thread sorry) that the cdl acts as a 2wd/4wd switch, how does that work?

Push the CDL switch and the front driveshaft spins, off, no spin. It locks the front output and rear output (which is driven)

Ditched mine too. nothing was wrong from them but I ended up with a set of aisins off of a 60 series

Yes, definitely. Not sure I follow how AVMs cause this and how AISIN hubs will fix this problem though. Can anyone explain?

When the 1FZE was presented by Toyota in our country in 1993, I was invited with the press and had the pleasure to speak with one of the engineers of the developing team.

The first question I asked him was why we didn´t get the same Full Time version as the USA model and ours got the part time with hubs ?

His answer was blunt: for third world or undeveloped country´s, the part time was better, less complicated to service, more power to the wheels and that I should be happy to have it, period.

It was around 2002 that our top trim 80 series came standard with the full time transmission and all my friends who replaced their older Part Time model with the latest Full Time, hate them, all were dissapointed with the Full Time perfomance and it´s lack of power.

^^^can you comment on the steering geometry of the South America 80 series that came stock with front manual locking hubs? How does it differ from stock FJ80/FJZ80 from NA?

made order on saturday and received the kit on wednesday kit was 307 $ + 67 $ for shipping
looks good and cheaper than double cardan shaft

Everyone said to NOT get the avm lol

Ok,
So im-a-gknna take a swing at this here idea....be gentle.

(I think someone else asked something similar, but thin responses made me come back and ask in a different way.)

94 TLC.- bone stock - no CDL switch in her yet, no #7 pin mod yet - no lockers .

I had been looking into ARB locker,Eaton, etc. The cost of those led me to Aussie locker...but can't/shouldn't put that in the front.

Then I read in an Aussie locker thread that if you had a PT4WD conversiin, that an Aussie up front was OK.

So, the fantasy goes like this....install PT4WD kit with Aisin hubs. Install CDL switch. (#7pin mod too? Or redundant?) Install Aussie lockers front and back.

If doing the above, what pitfalls would one expect to have to manage?

If doing the above, will I be risking undue or premature failure of otherwise historically bombproof systems? Or simply installing simplicity and a modicum of versatility?

Thoughts? And please, remember I'm a noob, and a delicate flower of a noob at that.

I thank you ....

Has anybody noticed or had rear vibes after the part time install. Im chasing one now. Just had the rear shaft balanced and it's gone when the rear shaft is removed. Im thinking it's the bearing.

Thoughts?

Do the vibes go away when you grease the u-joints?

Do you have any play in the rear output flange? Side to side, up/down, forward/aft?
