This has got me thinking now about learning enough to shoot my 88 4runner. Start practicing on fenders and hood, move on to the whole damn thing. Can you recommend a entry level learner paint gun and basic setup? I have a compressor and some driers and filters already.

I have a good name brand gun that is entry level, under $150. The cheapo guns work great for the first paint job, but then seem to go down hill. I am no expert on it though. I'm just the guy that does the driveway hack job with dirt and bugs in my paint :p

I use a harbor freight gun that was $20 for primer and then a Devilbiss FLG-4 or something (it was around $200 I think) for base/clear. I use all high flow air fittings and I think it makes a big difference.

I think cleaning the guns really, really well is more important than having nice guns when you're learning. I wouldn't hesitate to even use the top end harbor freight stuff. It's not great, but it's good enough.
 
Just from reading this thread and Kelly’s process, makes me think it’s worth trying. I didn’t realize that a lot of the work was done after the paint gets sprayed. Seems less intimidating knowing I can sand and buff.

Just from reading this thread and Kelly’s process, makes me think it’s worth trying. I didn’t realize that a lot of the work was done after the paint gets sprayed. Seems less intimidating knowing I can sand and buff.

You can with single stage paint (no clear coat).

You've probably answered this already but, how much (roundabout) did you pay for materials and what not? I mean, you probably already had some of it like the spray rig.

When I was trying to find the perfect blue for a build (a CJ8... I know, I know. I’ve learned) I kept a note pad on the passenger seat. If I saw a good blue, I’d jot down the make, year, etc. in the end that perfect color came off a swatch from an interior house paint - the painter scanned and matched it.
