What are you guys paying these days on full repaint (same colour as stock), on y our 60/62 these days?

I know labor rates are different all over the country etc, so I am just looking for a ballpark.

Couple of the 60/62 members I spoke to locally, seem to be about $6500 for glass out. Obviously cheaper if not glass out.

However, I was reading this No Reserve: 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 and people are saying thats a $1,200 paint job.

The quotes I have gotten have ranged from $3,500-$8,500 which is a pretty big spread.

Appreciate some info.

I'm in the same boat and all the quotes I've gotten are higher than anything you've posted above. From what I've been told, the supplies alone for a "complete" are 1500-2K. There are also only two places I've found in my town that will even do completes since they all seem to prefer the steady cash of collision repair.

I got quotes of 6-8 for respraying the same color... 6+ for just the outside, 8+ if we do jambs too. Then, up to 10-12 if we want to turn it a different color.

I finally got a rough quote of 6-8K to turn my rig a different color if I sanded everything down to metal, took out the glass, emblems, etc, and brought them all of the parts ready for prep and paint.

I should say though, those quotes above do include some minor rust repair: Likely the lip under the windshield will need to be partially or fully replaced, and there are a couple minor blisters in other areas that could need fixing once the paint is sanded off.

I would very much like to find a place that will do a good job with good paint for 4-6K...

This is a loaded question. So many factors go into determining a cost estimate for a paint job. The current condition is #1 and then how deep in the process you want them to go. Glass out is going to be in the high single digits and greater depending on quality of materials (paint etc. ) and amount of body work required. It’s hard to get consistent feedback from a large group as no 2 paint jobs are the same due to variables listed above. Not sure who’s saying that BAT 60 was a $1200 job, but I can tell you they need to put down the pipe :). I do my own paint and body and my blue 87 cost more than that for the OMNI (medium grade material) paint products I used on my truck. Your best bet is to continue getting estimates as well as networking with local cruiser peers that have had their trucks painted in your area. Good luck and I’m certain you’ll love the outcome once your 60 is painted.

Makes sense what you wrote.

I just want to clarify the quotes I have seen - I don't know the finished product. I am waiting for couple of LC guys to finish locally to see the product.

Yah I don't want to be the guy who posts "hey what are you paying for insurance." I know the question is loaded and so many variables ;)

I just wanted to see a ballpark.

Thank you for the great post. The BAT FJ put receipts at the end. $1000 for dent repair. $1100 for paint. But to me that doesn't make sense. He is a local guy as well.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Hi, I can not find a very good paint job in Dallas for less than 8,000. Mike

My dad put a 299 $ earl scheib single stage paint job on a old yoyota pickup he had. Looked pretty decent. and lasted ok. Was rust free and no repairs no jambs etc. You could repaint a vehicle roughly 33 times at that rate for the price of one nice one. At the end of the day.. very few of these rigs are show worthy... and why you’d want to own an off-road rig with a 10k paint job is beyond me. But im kinda old school Mexican about it

Save your money for more important tasks or repairs.

Ha...Those that know me well will tell you I’m a cheap ass. That’s the second reason I’d never pay someone all that $ to paint my truck. Now I do like a show truck finish and I do use my truck. Fortunately paint and body work are my favorite parts in building a cruiser. Pinstripes and dings don’t bother me since I can remedy the situation myself. It’s a ton of work and understandable that most would not want to mess with it. Here’s my personal cruiser after I finished the job several years ago and another one when I got it home after a trip through the San Jaun’s.

No external rust, just a reshoot of the stock original color on the exterior with high quality materials should cost around 7 to 9k. Figure about 1500 for each panel that needs cancerous rust removal. If you do a paint job on a 60 with rust, its very possible the body needs to come off to fix floor rust and such which would probably raise the price to north of 20k. Any rust that is not dealt with will just continue to get worse, so if their is rust on the floor or in the fenderwells and ignored, it will eventually need to be addressed anyway. My 2 cents.

Thanks guys. Gives me great idea for numbers.

i am not looking to win concours level. Just make it presentable

thanks

I just picked up a gallon of base, gallon of clear, reducer and hardener and some sealer in gray to paint my 62. I also bought a quart of red base/clear for my pickup. I used Martin Seymour Cross/Fire from NAPA it is on the low end of what I'd consider a middle quality paint. The paint was little over $500. IIRC, for the gray supplies alone it was about $380 with a middle of the road clear (got a small shop discount).

Tape, paper, foam tape, filler, gloves, cleaners, tack rags, etc put me at about $200 (most will last for multiple jobs). I decided to get the PPS cup system and adapter for my gun, and that cost another $60ish. My gun was $100, and then you need a good compressor too. I just installed a 240 10kw heater so the paint won't get ruined in the cold. That was another $400 self-installed w supplies. This will be exterior only, no jams.

Spending an extra $150 on an IR panel heater to ensure everything stays warm and cures at a reasonable rate.

Prep is what costs a lot, but I enjoy it, and with a good DA sander, it isn't too labor intensive. The actually spraying is fairly easy.

If you use your LC for off-road/daily driver, do it yourself. If it is a show car pay someone.

Some of the current guns work so well, that even someone like me can put down a pretty good paint job.

I'll probably wait til Spring to paint my 62, when I have more time and warm weather to prep. My pickup bed will be painted soon.

you could probably be in for about $45 bucks, five or six Krylon spray cans should cover most of a 60 (if it's lifted high enough you don't need to paint the roof)

Whichever path you choose (DIY or Professional), take your windows out. Plenty of threads on taking cargo windows out and a new windshield without pitting/scratches really improves nighttime visibility.
I had mine done recently and found a good bit of rust(perforated the metal) In my lower windshield which would have been major if we did’t catch it. I had new metal put in which is shown in black in my photos. Also found minor but developing patches in one of the cargo windows. Also found some previously poorly repaired rust repairs where it was coming back around the gas filler door.

Good rule of thumb 9-12k for high quality windows out job plus any surprise issues.
