After a long trip to Crater Lake this weekend it's looking like I'm in need of a new radiator for my 1996 FZJ80. I'm an OEM purist and I've been reading everything I can find on Koyo vs TYC vs OEM. Most of the threads are several years old and indicate that OEM radiators are no longer available, but I'm seeing them for sale from several sources for ~$450.

Am I missing something, or is it available again? Considering the original lasted 258k I'm inclined to spend the money on an OEM replacement, unless you guys have a good reason to go with an aftermarket unit.

Rock auto sells a Denso for $151

OEM T.Rad radiators are readily available from any Toyota dealership.

Is there a difference between them and the ones people said were discontinued in the threads from years prior?

What Onur said. IME some online Toyota retailers won't ship radiators due to possible damage claims, so their web sites may
say "Not Available" which is not the same as "Discontinued".

I bought a TRAD radiator from McGeorgetoyotaonlineparts.com for $345 last fall.

Go OEM mate!
Unless there's an emergency situation or planning to sell soon your vehicle, the price difference is diluted over the lifespan of the truck. Not worth the risk IMO
I'm lurking far more often than participating in the forum capitalizing on the vast experience and knowledge accumulated here. Yet, if there's one thing I've learned-with very few exceptions, is to go OEM as much as possible. Mr T engineering and QA are the benchmark in the industry
FWIW, as PM, I've just done a complete overhaul of the cooling system on my 97' FZJ: rad, water pump, thermostat, hoses, Toyota Long Life coolant, etc... All OEM, except clamps (constant torque everywhere, nuts & bolts) and the PHH by-pass (Gates green stripe). Everything was running fine, but with 180K and a few planned long trips, I considered it a good investment.
I'm not suggesting other alternatives are bad, but as some original parts are getting harder to get, I'll do the extra mile to get thing as Mr T wanted to be. Just peace of mind.
Cheers!

Anybody try one of these? Thinking it might be an upgrade over factory?

Looks like it would require modifications to fit/work.

Why not just buy a Toyota radiator? We can only assume that a new unit is of equal quality to the one that lasted many years.

Because your assumption is wrong? Rads today are produced by automatic production lines so the product redesigned to fit this technology
Sounds like jiberish.......

You're right. Radiators are not rocket science either

...
Foam?

The radiator should be sealed to the core support, done with foam strip. The dealer one comes with, aftermarket needs to be added. The stuff that comes on the dealer ones is open cell, closed cell works better and lasts longer, and placement can be done better than what is supplied. None of them come with the lower strip.

If you are in a temperate climate, don't load motor hard, etc, the dealer aluminum radiator will likely work fine. But there are more efficient ones available, the TYC significantly out performs the dealer radiator.
