My license plate light was disconnected when I bought the 40. Can I just splice a wire off the rear tail light? The tail lights turn on when I turn on the headlights, as they should.
Is that the easist fix? I should mention it has the "Swing Out Tire System made by Wilderness accessories for Specter Off Road".
Thanks,
The Missouri Moron

I agree with Charlie, same circuit.

On my 79, there's a wire bundle that enters the rear cab through a hole near right ambulance door. It supplies power to the rear side marker and license plate lights. You might look to see if any of your original wiring is still intact.
Mine is a '74. I see the collection of what I think is the trailer hitch wiring bundled up.

Do you have a test light or multimeter? Depending on which side your license plate bracket is, you should find the factory splice somewhere in the back of the rear fenderwell. The wires should run up into the tub. From there 1 wire runs across the amby door and out to the license plate bracket. I think there should be a ground wire too. If your trailer wiring was installed by the PO it maybe be really hacked up. If you're not going to use a trailer you might consider removing the wires the PO installed and make sure everything is connected and wired correctly.

I have the diagram printed and laminated. Just didnt want to mess the 40 up. I screwed up looking at it before. Hoping for easy fix. ...always looking for the easier softer way... ;-)

PO's, prior repairs both good & bad, trail fixes; old wires and eyes, looking at faded colors makes things like is that red or pink sometimes a challenge - keep docuccumention of your work - at least a field sketch, good pic's or vids even better.

Do you have ambulance doors or something else? Which side is you license plate bracket on?

I'm glad I asked. That's quite a contraption. Where do you want the license plate to be? Where's the spare tire go? I can't tell if it's a drop down tailgate or barn doors or....

Barn doors.

Your wires would have originally been on the drivers side with the spare on the passenger side. I would check on that side. If you plan to have it near the driver side you can use the wires from that side. If not, I would make sure the PO properly terminated the wires. I agree with Mattresking, it’s best to get confortable reading the factory schematic, there’s no better resource. Also make sure it has a good ground.
