My license plate light was disconnected when I bought the 40. Can I just splice a wire off the rear tail light? The tail lights turn on when I turn on the headlights, as they should.
Is that the easist fix? I should mention it has the "Swing Out Tire System made by Wilderness accessories for Specter Off Road".
Thanks,

I agree with Charlie, same circuit.

On my 79, there's a wire bundle that enters the rear cab through a hole near right ambulance door. It supplies power to the rear side marker and license plate lights. You might look to see if any of your original wiring is still intact.
Mine is a '74. I see the collection of what I think is the trailer hitch wiring bundled up.

Do you have a test light or multimeter? Depending on which side your license plate bracket is, you should find the factory splice somewhere in the back of the rear fenderwell. The wires should run up into the tub. From there 1 wire runs across the amby door and out to the license plate bracket. I think there should be a ground wire too. If your trailer wiring was installed by the PO it maybe be really hacked up. If you're not going to use a trailer you might consider removing the wires the PO installed and make sure everything is connected and wired correctly.

this is where a factory service manual would come in handy as well
