Are you going to reinstall those springs after you fix the perches or go with something different? Some shots along the way.
Here are the fixed spring perches and you can see where the military wraps have been rubbing now that the rear axle is removed…

My gut is telling me “no”.Are you going to reinstall those springs after you fix the perches or go with something different?
I've always had great luck with Alcan, and for more budget-minded Skyjacker has worked well too. Both brands ride and flex extremely well. For a short wheelbase 40 that is!My gut is telling me “no”.
FWIW, both of us have had terrible experiences with Dobinsons to the point where we believe we got springs out of a bad batch and they won’t admit it (even though they pretty much did to me then back tracked). We purchased at very close intervals.I've always had great luck with Alcan, and for more budget-minded Skyjacker has worked well too. Both brands ride and flex extremely well. I bought my Dobinson 2" about the same time as you @RevISK & @Ol YellerFWIW, both of us have had terrible experiences with Dobinsons to the point where we believe we got springs out of a bad batch and they won’t admit it (even though they pretty much did to me then back tracked). We’ve both given them every opportunity to make good and they just straight up suck at customer service here in the US. My springs are worthless, for real. Dangerous even.
Yep. And ghosted post filing a claimFWIW, both of us have had terrible experiences with Dobinsons to the point where we believe we got springs out of a bad batch and they won’t admit it (even though they pretty much did to me then back tracked). We purchased at very close intervals.

I talked to the on phone etc to them in FL and got nothing back. Poked the main office in AU that their reputation is being represented by them in FL (if they care about their name long-term). And I am done and have moved on.I bought my Dobinson 2" about the same time as you @RevISK & @Ol Yeller
via a mud vendor, through Dobinson USA. Same dimensions on the mil wrap as yours, thus they were never installed. I was hoping you all had made some headway with them. Sadly it doesn't look like it.
I have their springs on my 60 and love them, but they got the wrap dimensions correct on that one.
What are you using for fixed spring pins and bushings?Damn, Bryan sorry to hear about this spring BS. Oddly, last month another 40 owner was questioning me about my suspension and if I was having issues (read/heard about on mud etc). Then I remember @bhardy78 mentioning the same thing….I’ve not dealt with this issue to the extent you display. Especially on-road![]()
@cruiseroutfit ‘74 fj40-Only sourced the springs (heavy). Greased pins, shackles & Bilstein shocks. What are you using for fixed spring pins and bushings?
Yeah sucks for sure- especially for the coin dropped and lack of any follow through.Damn, Bryan sorry to hear about this spring BS. Hate to hear this and will keep in mind as others inquire. I’m sure we’ll see ya in ‘25.Yeah sucks for sure- especially for the coin dropped and lack of any follow through.
All this is why I had to bail on your crawl even in Oct. I will make it!
Yeah, I will likely heat and smash or cut those mil wraps off.Yep. And ghosted post filing a claim
For now, Rus is going to cut those MOFO’s wraps and will go on until I decide what to do. That or my OME I still have.
Who knows, for me, I didn’t have the lean like Ian did with his bad batch. They might be “ok” enough until I know more. And getting it drivable is the biggest issue. Hacked Dobbies is way less important.. got fuel tanks fun to post about
PreachYeah, I will likely heat and smash or cut those mil wraps off.
It just plain sucks, though. Customers shouldn't have to do that with brand new springs.
It was a simple fix for Dobinson, support their products, own up to the mistake of putting a larger wrap compatible with a later style 40, 60 and 70 series springs instead of the smaller wrap needed for 8/80 and prior 25mm springs.
The cost to replace this batch would have been far cheaper than all of the future business lost due to these types of posts.
Like you though, moving on with my 40. More important fish to fry so to speak
