On a more technical note... we drove 44 north out US95 yesterday, to see how she handled with the new tires.

The good news...

No drift at all... so, I was right, the drift the other day was the result of the grooved pavement on the loop.

The bad news...

She has no power above about 2600 rpm on any incline... no matter how slight.

She has all sorts of power on a flat road...

So, the fuel pump issue I faced last time I had her off road, has caused some other issues...

I haven't done the paper clip test yet, but, I'm sure the secondary is not kicking in... I don't know if it's the result of crap in the carb or crap somewhere else in the fuel delivery system.

The fuel filter (clear glass filters) elements are new and clean... so, the crap is somewhere else, I'm going to EDIT: These are tasks I will do, as needed...
  • do the paper clip test and see if that confirms the loss of the secondary
  • drop the Pollak valve and clean it out and blow out all fuel lines
  • drain the main tank and clean it out, but dropping the aux tank (to clean it) is a challenge that I will get to before the weather cools back down in October.
  • rebuild my 2nd Aisin carb (I have a rebuild kit)... but, I'll try seafoam and carb cleaner on the mounted carb first... I already tried an okie rebuild a couple of times.
  • drop the secondary actuator and clean it and suck test it.
  • check the dissy vacuum module and see if it quit working
  • check the timing
  • look for vacuum leaks... my vacuum has always been 15-17... never higher than 17... but, currently right at 15. It's possible I have a vacuum leak that is contributing to the secondary failure (if that's what it is).
I can't really use 44 this summer anyway... way too hot to safely drive it into my playground.

Actually, I just had a thought (first one in a while)... I'm running an OEMfuel pump, but I have the new electric Carter fuel pump and plenty of soft hose... I'll first bypass the Pollak, using the Carter to draw directly from the main tank, thru a filter (I have a new one), and deliver directly to the carb and see how that works... if it works, the problem is in the delivery system and not in the carb or dissy advance.

Can anyone suggest anything else I should check/do?

You should sell it to me for dirt cheap since there is a major problem with 44!

On a serious note, I have nothing useful to add to this conversation. I am going to pay attention though, I discovered the secondary on my carb did not open mechanically while I was playing with it last week.

'bout time you started paying attention, Ryan!! ;)

@Pin_Head has everything you ever wanted to know about the Aisan Secondary... but, were afraid to ask...

Pin also said, "What's so hard about the paper clip test?"... well, I apparently had a defective paper clip... it fell off... couldn't have been the operator... had to be the clip... so, I have to try again with a super duper paper clip... I'll practice with the clip for a while, before trying it again.

OK... practice obviously helped!! I tried the paper clip test again and it stayed on this time... roughly 1/2" of travel... so, that's good.

But, I noticed my carb linkage is sticking a bit... enough to idle at 1100 rpm, until I slap the throttle... Could be... the secondary pump rod is sticking at times as well...

So, a good carb cleaning is in order, fer sur!!

I poured the remainder of my seafoam (several ounces) into the main tank and ran 44 for a couple of minutes (off the main tank )... now, I need to wait until tomorrow morning for the engine to cool down sufficiently for me to not burn my tender hands... also, to allow the seafoam to work its magic.

But... and this is confusing... my vacuum is now consistently registering 17 (again - at 650 rpm)... after being at 15 for the past two days...

Anyway... more tomorrow...

...

There is no secondary pump rod, but if the secondary vacuum op rod is holding the secondary open, you could check by turning the engine off when it is idling high and then take the air cleaner off and see if the secondary throttle is open and whether you can manually close it.

Thanks Pin!! What I meant was the rod on the secondary actuator (e.g. the rod to which I attach the paper clip)... I think that's what you mean by the "secondary vacuum op rod"... sorry for my misspeak... English is my first language and I'm still working on it... ;)

I'm going to jump in in the morning, while the garage and the engine are both cool and I'll give your suggestion a shot.

Thanks!!

Well.. As I said, I ran SeaFoam thru the gas tank and the fuel system and let it soak overnight.

This morning, I also hosed down the carb and all linkages and found the carb mounting nuts were no longer snugged down... I snugged them down and put the air cleaner back on and reconnected all the hoses.

I also found the air filter needed changing... more insects with the snorkel... I'm going to add a second screen.

She started right up and ran like a dream.

So, Chester and I went for a drive... and drive we did!!

These pictures aren't great, but she hit 3600 rpm

... and 70 mph going uphill

But, she was heating up nicely as well... the summer/headers are definitely going to require the carb cooling fan that I removed for the snorkel... I'll find a place to reinstall it.. none of the carb cooling fan circuitry works anyway... so, I'll set it up to come on/off with the timer I used before.

Are your headers coated?

No... No need for a coat... they are already 400-450* ;)

I've reinstalled my carb cooling fan... I had to rework it, to clear the snorkel, and I added about 8" of tube, to direct the air to the carb... seems to help significantly.

So, you have the fan running when the engine is running?

Correct... right now it's on when the ignition is on... that's when I need it most... if it becomes an issue, I will reinstall the timer... to allow me to also run it after I shut 44 down.

If you recall... my last time off-road, I had fuel delivery issues and had to pull my OEM pump. While I didn't find anything wrong with it, I suspect it was plugged and cleared when I blew it out. At that time, I installed my backup OEM pump (it was on 44 when I bought her).

The other day, I modified my carb cooling fan (to fit with my snorkel) and reinstalled it.

When I started 44, the backup OEM fuel pump diaphragm developed a small 'split' and started dumping fuel through the weep hole.

I pulled the pump and went to install the pump I had pulled while off-road... that was when I found the hard line (pump to carb) olive was 'frayed' to the point that the nut would no longer couple with the 'L' output on the pump.

I found nuts and olives on ToyotaPartsDeal and they'll be here on Monday. I also bought a length of 5/16" steel, so I'll bend a new line for the pump to carb.

I also carry a Carter electric pump and a spool of fuel line, as a secondary backup... so, I've ordered a second Carter electric pump and a Carter Engine Oil Pressure Switch and a 1/8"BSP Male to 1/8" BSP female (to accommodate sharing the oil sender port with the pil pressure switch) - with 1/8" NPT female (to accommodate the oil pressure switch).

Rather than completely rework my fuel delivery system (which means moving the Pollak switching valve to the back of the truck, to allow the Carter to be shared between both tanks (e.g. it needs to be mounted near the tanks), I'm going to install one of the Carter pumps near the main tank and one near the Aux tank... both will have fuel filters upstream (between them and their tank) and both will be wired to the Oil Pressure Switch to ensure they are shut down, when the oil pressure drops below 2psi. They will pump fuel when the engine is cranked... allowing then engine to be started.

This configuration will afford me a primary (oem mechanical, shared by both tanks) pump and a secondary (electric for each tank) pump. The electric pump will come on when the DPDT switch on the dash selects the associated tank... e.g. only the electric pump will be active at a time... but, this will provide an actual tertiary pump ability.

The electric pump(s) will boost the fuel flow produced by the oem pump... which will significantly improve steep hill climbs. NOTE: I'm thinking of adding a switch to allow me to selectively run the 'selected' electric pump.

I also carry a Big Block Chevy block-off plate, in case the oem pump acts up and needs to be removed... I would need to temporarily plumb around the Pollak switch... but that would be easy to do off-road and would not be time consuming.

That's my plan... film at 11... or, when I make the installations.

I already had the new steel line, Sarge... I went with it...

All the new parts arrived, but we're getting ready for a 3 week trip (Utah and Colorado), with the Tundra and Casita Trailer... so, I bent the new line and reinstalled the oem pump that I removed, while off-road... she fired right up and sounds really lovely!!

I had her purring and was going to take her out for a drive, when Dianna came running into the garage and said, "they're fighting next door!! It sounds really bad!! I called 911!!".

I don't want to get into all the details of the long winded statement I had to write for the police. But, the gist of it is that 3 guys pistol-whipped the 20-something girl next door, asking for drugs and money. She has a propensity for bringing riff raff home with her... she says she didn't know them, but they pulled into the driveway right behind her. She works in some part of the 'pleasure' industry...

When I saw them driving off, I flagged a cop outside our gate and pointed at them... he took off after them, with lights and siren and I started home (100') and heard 3 gunshots... then I heard the neighbor girl screaming, "please help me!". I ran back and found her in her 'over the back fence' neighbor's yard... she was wearing white pants and black bra and was covered in blood (she was high on something, perhaps only adrenaline). I got the neighbor to open his door and assured him the gentlemen were gone. I assured the girl they were gone and, after asking several times, I learned her twin daughters were at grandma's. Whew!!

She said, "They pistol-whipped her and kept asking for the drugs and money"...

The gentlemen crashed the SUV (turned out to be stolen) about a mile away and fled on foot... the cops caught one and the other two carjacked a landscaper's GMC pickup WITH TRAILER and slipped away... Here's the article Police officer shot at in NLV, suspect in custody

So, I haven't taken 44 on the highway yet... this is why I always keep a loaded gun handy, in the garage... and everywhere else...

I'll install the 'lectric stuff after we get back home, from Colorado.

No pictures of 44, but I have this picture... a Carter Oil Pressure Switch that came in a little white box, inside a bigger Carter box, inside and bigger box, with lots of airbag padding.

It was like 4 presents in one!!

sounds like you need to print out my list on a first aid kit.... but it must be something in the air. I got a call on Sat. (while on vacation) that 3 people got killed on my parent's yard. They were probably drunk, got airborne in front of their house and got t-boned by another driver... my brother got killed in a similar manner 8 years ago (like 8 years, 1 month).... so they were more than a little shook up. sigh, bad people, bad world....3 killed, 2 injured in Oregon City crash

Wow alot has been happening with you ... The world is a terrible place... But... It could have been soooooo much worse... stray bullets like to find things to hit... Glad it wasn't you guys

We had a cokehead across the street for like a year ... There was much rejoicing by the whole neighborhood when she moved away

Danny, I was only joking about Sodom and Gomorrah.:(

Yeah, the timing really sucks... sorry for your parents.

I had 44 running in the garage... I didn't hear a thing until I heard Erin screaming when I walked out the main gate to try to flag down the cops. They were more anxious to get to their Brother officer who had been shot at and were flying on down the main road.

While I hate that she got hurt, I'm glad I didn't hear it happening, I may have gotten killed... or killed someone... good that they drove off when they did... she'll recover and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.

I was so relieved when she finally told me her twins were at grandma's house!!
