Walking away is usually the right course of action. Curious to see if the turbo froze up and if not how it works on your set up. Do they sell rebuild kits for it?

That sucks about both the tire and turbo. I know the 16.5 in. diameter tires are notorious for coming off when low on air, it's the main reason they have beadlocks on humvees. Glad you weren't hurt.
I'm also curious to see what happened with the turbo, my first one had some play and wasn't spooling correctly. I changed the chra and it works great now. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

On a different note, did you have to change the governor spring in your fuel pump, I'm thinking of going to the 3800 rpm one just so I can get up to speed faster on the highway.

Can't find a rebuild kit on first quick search, but they may. However, if this turbo is froze up, I'm going to try to get my damn money back!!

For reference, the turbo is a Borg Warner S2EL196- Serial - 171270

The hummer tires really are known for coming off the rim? Well damn. It happened to me once before, but it was on the trail and due to a hole in the sidewall. Guess I should have filled the tire up before pulling out of the driveway :bang:

I've got the 3800rpm spring in mine. Due to the WG issues with my HX30W, I haven't used the extra RPMs more than a couple of times, but when I need it, I'm glad I have it.

Also, a brand new genuine Borg Warner S2EL196 is available through ebay for ~$550. If this one is bad and I get my $$ back, I'll be buying a brand new one. If I can't get my $$ back, I'll try to find a rebuild kit for this one.

Finally, here's the reference thread from 4BTSwaps:

I'll look at it later tonight.

yeah sorry to be the one to tell you about the tires, I thought you knew. Just keep them aired properly and drive safely. Invest in beadlocks if you're gonna keep them.

Definitely. I've got H1s on the back already, waiting to be able to put them up front.

Thanks man!

Awesome build! and I hope some day I will have my 4bt fj60 running.

As for the Hummer 16.5 tires coming off the rim, the tires are not the problem. It is the wheels. Typical steel wheels in the 16.5 size do not come with a safety bead. I have seen several articles on pirate where guys have welded a safety bead onto their wheel....doesn't look fun. One option you may want to look into is using a beadsealer. It is a super sticky black goop you apply to the bead of the tire while mounting the wheel. The stuff works great for low pressure rock crawling applications.

I made a huge mistake trying to get hummer wheels and tires to work for me. After a year of fighting with them and throwing money to the wind I decided to just buy a nice set of tires and wheels.

Keep up the awesome work!

Hey man, thank you! Do you have a build thread about your 4BT powered FJ60?

Interesting comment about the wheels, I hadn't thought that they were the issue.

Did you ever run the H1 double-beadlocks? I've got a set of those on the rear and like them so far. That obviously eliminates the issue of the tire coming off the rim.

What tires and rims did you get that are as tall as the military OZs with a highway-friendly tread pattern?

You and tires don't get along.

No build thread yet...If I decide to do one I will let you know. My project is currently on hold because I recently moved from New Mexico to Colorado. Currently I do not have a house or shop....can't wait to buy, just waiting for the right one.

I did run the H1 beadlocks. I ordered them recentered from Trailworthy Fab with their PVC internal beadlock. The problem I had was balancing.(I'm not talking a slight wobble..sometimes it felt as if the tires were bouncing off the asphalt) These were mounted to my Dodge Cummins, so highway smoothness was crucial. I tried bb's, antifreeze, and special balancing rings with no luck. What I discovered is that no matter how hard I tried to center the tire on the wheel, once the internal PVC ring pintched the bead the tire was never centered perfectly. I ended up selling everything I had related to H1 wheels and tires.

I think one way to make it work is to use the internal stauns inflatable beadlocks. You could mount your OZ tire on your H1 wheel with a stauns installed. Air up the tire to mount it centered on the wheel. Then deflat the tire and inflate the stauns. This thought it expensive though and for me the original thought of running OZ tires was because they are cheap.

I ended up buying 325/70R17 Nitto Duragrapplers with a 17x8 wheel. The tires are a little wide for my taste, but they role smooth and have a warranty so I am happy.

Good luck on the house search! I'm going through the same thing right now.

Gotcha. Balancing with my stock H1 wheels isn't bad. I've got a shimmy at 45-50, but at highway speed, it's as smooth as glass.

After I get a D60 up front to make the width match the 14b I've got out back, I'll look into getting a set of road tires and wheels, assuming that I can find some in an offset that will work for me.

I had the same issue. Bought them from trail worthy fabs, waited two weeks only to find out the ones I ordered wouldn't clear the calipers. So I had to wait for spacers to come in. When I finally mounted them they were so off balance it was scary. No tire shop would touch them because they were beadlocked and apparently that was a insurance/safety issue for them. I starting thinking about selling them, but then I found an automotive place that does fleet repairs on diesels and the manager was a hard core wheeler. He decided to do them for me. I still ahd to go back once more for one tire that needed to get rotated on the wheel then rebalanced. Now I love them and feel the money was well worth it. I don't understand why Andy at trail worthy fabs won't balance them right there, that seems to be a huge complaint his customers have.

Haven't checked in on your build for awhile. Sorry to hear about Laura, glad she is okay. You have been busy on Moonshine. Sucks about the turbo and the tire coming off. Gonna have to check in more frequently to see how things are going.

In the process of putting everything back together on my truck. Have to put the body, engine, and everything back in so I can do the SOA and then the C&T. Slow going right now.

No worries man!

Laura's fine, thanks for the concern. We've got a newer Jetta and I'm getting a check for $2800 for the old one, so it's all good.

I've been keeping tabs on your build. Keep at it!

Did you find out what was wrong with the new turbo? My HX30W (with the smaller housing) is running great. I got a new lock up torque converter and can't believe how fast the 80 is now on the highway.

I did! I took the used Borg Warner turbo apart far enough to find that neither the turbine nor compressor wheels have contacted their respective housings, but that the bushings in the CHRA have siezed. I will be shipping this turbo back to the seller for a full refund.

Turbo has been shipped back, waiting for a refund now. New tire has been installed and Moonshine is fully operational again.

Went and picked up a BEAUTIFUL M101A3 this weekend!! I'm in the final stages of buying a house on .72 acres, so this trailer will be awesome not only for moving, but also for cleaning everything up on the property.

This trailer weighs 1300# empty but surprisingly I couldn't feel it that much behind Moonshine. EGTs were too high at highway speed though, so I was limited to 65mph for the tow home. Definitely time to put in an intercooler. I'll get started on that project after we get into this new house.

It fits in my little 1 car garage, but I had to put most of what was in the garage in the trailer to make it work  I guess packing has started!!
