I am very glad I went with the 14bolt axle!! I have a ton of comfort in the fact that my 14 bolt axle will never break. It's a bit of a boat anchor, but I'm OK with that, because it's got a shovel of a pinion guard, which also protects the rear driveshaft, and the axle shafts are stupid large.

As for the 6 lugs vs 8 logs, it's stupid that I'm doing that. You can deal with that problem my getting 6 lug hubs for the 14 bolt or by getting 6 lug to 8 lug adapters for the front. I'm not doing either, but instead I'm putting a D60 up front.

As for suggestions, make sure that you get a late model 14 bolt, also called an AAM 10.5, so that you get factory disk brakes and a rotor-in-hat e-brake.

What transfer case are you running?

ah, very fast response!

Well looking at the NP241 after the NV4500 - buying the NP241 this evening here in the area for $50, from a 1988/89 chevy, for use or for core. The guy just wants it GONE.

Not familiar with the D60 and don't want to go that far (yet) of replacing the front.

What is considered "late model" years?

There's a post earlier in this thread that breaks down the model years for the newer 1 ton AAM axles. I got my axle out of an 03 Silverado 2500 hd with the 6.0 motor. If you can't find it, I'll repost it for you, but I can't do it now, on a phone.

Your np241 is driver's drop, is it not? Why are you going that route?

I highly recommend the Dana 300. Tons of aftermarket support, very strong out of the box, it's small (easy to fit in between and above the frame rails) and it's driver side drop from the factory.

thanks for the year

mmmm, driver's side: found that the np241 can be either driver's side or passenger's side. This is driver's side yes, not good for the TLC front axle

Considering np241 because lehiguy did this for his rig

mmmm, on the Dana 300 - I see it is a transfercase for jeeps, will it bolt to a nv4500?

Didn't realize the 241 came in both driver and passenger drop. Initial searching indicated drivers only. My bad!

The Dana 300 is what I'm running. It does not bolt directly to the Dodge 4x4 output housing of the nv4500hd, but with an aluminum 1.5" thick adapter and a HD input shaft, it works perfectly. I can get you more details on that as well if you'd like it.

Jonny,
Id just text you but I don't have a phone right now, long story...
I just went through 40 or so pages of this epic thread and got to thinking. Do you have any write up on your tailgate storage? Did you buy that or make it? If you bought it, feel like posting a link? or text it to me. I'll have my phone back from Verizon tomorrow.

haha thanks man

I do have a write-up! There are a bunch of posts in this thread back in 2007 when Kevin and I installed it.

This is the guy who builds them. This is the lid that's in my truck:

Text me if you have any questions. See you at Logan's Run?

So after coming back from CMCC I drove around for a couple of weeks on a bad DS front spring. Stock front leaf springs do not work very well with only 4 leaves in the pack. I had picked up a pair of original OME springs that had been run for a long time and put them in. Moonshine rides much better now.

Original spring with 4 leafs in the pack:

All done in my awesome shop of course:

In more exciting news, I won a Yaesu FTM-350R on eBay for a good deal, so I picked up a hatch mount, some cable, and a couple of diamond antennas for it as well. I got an adjustable 18" mount from Lido that I will use to mount the radio's head unit somewhere. Haven't decided where exactly yet.

I think I'll get started on the install this evening.

Congrats on the nice radio haul. For your bushes and trees, I'd run the short one. The longer one with the coil in the middle is very easily damaged in cover.

Those lip mounts are very nice. The 60 also has a nice way to home brew your own:

You can save the lip mount for your 80.:D

That's exactly what I intend to do. I bought both at once so I could have the trail antenna right away.

I had forgotten about that home brew antenna mount. I like this lip mount because it allows me to get the antenna higher above the roof line. Besides, there's no 80 in my future :p

When I get another Land Cruiser it'll be a 40. If I get a 3rd Land Cruiser, it'll be a LX470 or GX470. Gotta buy a house first though :D

What spacers are you running in the front? and are you running them in the rear as well?

EDIT, I just realized your oil pan is facing the other way than mine is. Did it come that way or did you turn it to avoid hitting anything?

I've got aluminum 1.5" spacers from Trail Gear on the front of my truck. No spacers on the rear with my 14 bolt.

What do you mean my oil pan is facing the other way? Yours is a front sump? Mine was a rear sump from the factory.

A very meatball style quote to contradict yourself in your own post. :hillbilly:

Don't got much more to add other than i've also got to make myself a mount and this truck is awesome. Even more so in person

I don't know what you're talking about. The post says "LX470" :flipoff2:

Good catch. I'm surprised no one else found that first!

I do what little I can

If I was going to get anything newer in the yota variety it would also be the GX470...... solid platform and I don't see why it couldn't wheel as good or better than a LX470.

Plus its still a real land cruiser on the 120 platform

See you in 2 weeks.

See you in 2 weeks.

Just a couple of days now brother!!!

Got some work done on Moonshine today. Had a real hard time deciding where to mount the head and brain of the FTM-350r. Was originally going to mount the brain to the bottom of the dash, then the head to the front, but I couldn't figure out where there'd be space under the dash. I picked up a Lido seat mount for the head, which came with some extra brackets to mount elsewhere, which was sweet. Ended up deciding to mount the whole shebang to the center console, since the inside is not exactly lacking in storage room. I think it came out really good! Just gotta route power and the stereo input cable and I'll be done.

A week ago I mounted the antenna to the rear hatch and today I routed the cable through the factory grommet down through the DS rear quarter.

Please excuse the dirty hoodie and bundled red data cable. I still haven't made a cover for the factory transfer case hole, nor have I decided where to store the radio's programming cable :o

Was going to set mine up last week but my cable has gone missing along with my antenna mount..... so now i'm just going to see if I win one of the 4 hand held units from the raffle this weekend. ;)

Thank you sir! It's certainly a long read, but there's a ton of info in here.

Pulled wires through the dash and console, wired in the antenna and got power to the radio. She works beautifully!! Install came out pretty clean too. Line-in feature works great so my phone hooks into the HAM, then my radio has a cable to go over to my stereo. I'm still learning how to use all the features of this radio, but the GPS antenna gives me a ton of info.

Then Laura had an accident on Friday, right before leaving for a camping trip. She's fine, but we'll be finding a new Jetta here very shortly.

IMAG0133.jpg

Then, at the end of the camping trip, we took the pig cooker to get a quote for repairs.
