Today I ran Italian Creek and Reno Divide (near Crested Butte, Co.)with my 95 FZJ-80 with the new Low Range gears. I have a stock 4:10 diffs with 35s.

What a difference!!! Much smoother over very rocky areas but particularly nice was the use of L/R 2 or 1 going down hill in very rocky areas. No Brakes! Just smooth power and gear braking.

This was really worth the money. Terry

I dont believe this... I need photos for proof that you wheel'd there... HAHA jk. I have kicked it around buying those gears.

thanks for the report, Terry

Nice! Did you get the 25% reduction low range gears from Slee? I think they are a great idea.

Yes, I had Christo do the installation. He is matching the discount from Marlin.

I keep kicking around the idea of these gears too. With the 35's and stock gears it take too much momentum/power to get through the rough rock gardens with grace.

You will really notice the difference with your set-up. Very smooth.

Are they any louder than stock apart from the increased engine RPM at a given road speed ? ie, is there any appreciable gear whine or other noise attributale to the mating of the gears comapred to OEM ?

No difference in gear noise, very smooth and no whine, even running fast in L/R High Gear. The big advantage is the crawl capability and down hill braking. Like having a manual transmission. Terry

If you don't mind me asking, what was the out the door price through Slee?

It was about $1100 I think. I say I think because in addition I had the transfer case rebuilt plus the Part Time Kit installed at the same time. They did it all in one day. Great service from Christo. Terry

If you don't mind my asking, what was the cost of the entire affair?

Right at $2407, with tax and the discounted L/R gears. That includes new bearings and seals for the transfer case as well as R&R of the case, skid plates and F/R D/S. Terry

Have refrained from ordering the gears while determining the "need" for PT, against the recommendations here on Mud, that it's not enough of an improvement to warrant. Glad that there's feedback on viability.

Wish I were closer to a reputable shop and would go that route on the install.

Thanks for the input.

Not all 80's respond the same with PT. Pull your drive line and see if you are OK with the way it drives no matter what is said on MUD.

the way that I understand it, you don't have to do the PT conversion to run the Marlin gears

You dont need the part time kit
But if you want to do the part time kit you might as well since you will have the tcase apart
