We had time to use the world's fanciest tubing bender to bend up some 1.5" tubing for our side pieces....fit them, tacked them.

Tomorrow we make the side supports and burn it all in. Then it's time for a swing out. We're on a roll.

It really looks like someone is finally solving the conundrum of how to make a 70 Series Ute rear bumper look like it was designed for the truck!

Nice work! I will add to my 70 Series wish list!

I bet the door rate for that bar would make your billfold scream Iike a little girl.

The rear bumpers with tire carriers were all really bad for the 79s. Either too blocky, too low, too long, too high......this one is just right I think :) if only it hadn't consumed 3 weeks of my life :(

You're a smart man Cruiserdan......the price tag on this would make grown men weep :)

All done....time to find another way to spend my time now.

Looks like an RC car sitting on the bumper.

Painted this thing rattle can satin black and bolted her on.....not to come off again for a little bit.

Fun thing with black paint....you get to see all your flaws. I've got a little more grinding to do in a few areas I'm not super happy with but for the most part, it's pretty well sorted.

Started in on my swing out.....challenging to get it where it needs to be. This was my second try :) glad I bought extra of the 2x3 tubing.

Might sneak in tomorrow to work on the upright that will hold the spare on.....I *think* I have it figured out. I want to keep the tire tucked up pretty tight to the back of the truck I think.

The spindle is insanely beefy.

Trying to visualize how the tire will fit....easier done with a cardboard cutout. With this setup I still get some sight out of my rear window which is important. Going to look mighty different with a tire on the back.

Made a couple mounts under the hood for the 2nd battery.....similar to the other truck but a little different. Going to use the bracing from the tray to the fender for a mount to hold the Rostra cruise control unit...that's how this all started.

@c2dfj45 any plans to throw this thing on a dyno once it's sorted? Would love to see what it can do!
No plans as of yet but we've got dynos all around our shop. I bet it would be disappointing.....probably not that much power but it sure drives nice :)

Ya more curious how to torque responds when the boost goes up. I want to imagine that the 1HD block can handle some 2JZ level boost. Am I alone?

I really want to get the intercooler on before I start upping the boost. I think 22psi sounds good....maybe 20. Hoping the G-turbo improves the low end side of things.....pretty sure it will. Might do some driving tomorrow in it now that I have a bumper on it.

I’m sure you’ve already mentioned this but are your aux bumper lights “running lights, turn signals and backup lights” all in one?

White ones are turn and reverse, red is running and brake. Really nice lights.

Going to install a Diode Dynamics pod light in the area where the slot is on the left side of the tail light valance....they offer a slick white flood light that has red backlighting. I'd like to have a nice bright reverse light.

Better to see your imperfections in paint you can fix rather than powder you can’t ;) Looking good -
For sure....not a lot of room for error in powder coat. We'll see how their filler works...kind of curious about that. Our powdercoat guy has used it before on some of our pieces but I'm going to do the finish work this time.....I'm a bit more particular I think :)

Next one I build, I'm going to have more of the metal bent by the sheet metal guy.....reduce the amount of metal finish work. Easy to do now that we have a template of sorts to work off of.

Spent a little time on the swing out today....in my attempt to tuck this thing in as close as possible, I think I'm going to do something like this to get it where I want it. I'll use some 1.5" square tubing, 2 pieces, with a 1/4" wall....should be plenty strong. Obviously gusset it in a few spots(like the back and sides). Should be pretty straight forward and easy to add the wheel mount plate to it. I've never seen one like this before. Maybe there's a reason why....maybe it will be weak....we'll see.
Any excuse to use my tubing bender is fine by me.

Tacked up the swing out arm so I could measure a few things.....I'm going to do a strut to keep it open. Hurt my brain trying to figure out a size....ended up with a 17" extended, 10.25" closed, quick disconnect on the socket mounts which may be a good idea if I ever needed to remove it.

Going to look pretty cool with a tire hanging on it....although I'll miss seeing "TOYOTA" on the tailgate :(

That down tube is pretty close to the tail gate. A fairly light tap to that tire may put the tube into the tail gate. :hmm:
