Underside......the rubber seal provides a really positive seal and has enough give in it that it will flex to match the motor moving around.

From driver's seat, it's WAY different than stock....my brain was kind of having a tough time NOT looking at the hood. I spent a lot of time deciding if I was going to go with this hood or the smaller version. I would have never thought this one was THIS big. It's the coolest thing I've put on the truck.

This poor truck's aero has gone from that of a brick to now that of a brick with all kinds of crap on it. Ha.

We will make our own IC. I kind of like the Cross Country style ones.....I like the supports they use to kind of suspend it off the motor. Easy enough to make. The OEM rubber skirt that seals to the IC has a lot of cushion to it. Kind of a nice piece.

I bought a 90* neck for the 1hdt's intake plenum.....it faces forward because it's for a front mount IC. So my piping may run a little differently than most top mounts. I wanted it to face the firewall and have the piping at the back of the IC....so we may have to make our own neck. We're a ways out on that though....we need to do some mock ups first before I get spun up like a maniac.

That Cross Country 4x4 is what I'm eyeballing, assuming it mates to the VDJ hood semi-decently. Looks somewhat close to the stock VDJ location and size.

I dropped them an email to see what they recommend based on my setup. Maybe this one would work with some adjustments to the factory inner section of the scoop. Maybe just ditch that and make a custom deflector or something. Or just a bunch of foam to seal it to the bottom of that hood

Dumb question, if you do not mind me asking: why not using a Toyota 1VD intercooler?

It should fit the hood/bonnet you got, and it would be OEM.

I've looked at it....I think it would take some serious work to make it fit an inline 6. Matching it up to the hood isn't a huge concern. Yet. Maybe at some point it will be

I spoke with Cross Country....they said there should be no problems with making it work as it is very popular to do 1HDTs and the VDJ style scoops BUT....he was unsure about one 'minor' difference between their trucks and mine. The LHD's brake booster/master might be an issue. I sent him a few pics with some measurements so we'll see what they come back with. Would be way easier just to buy one I think.

Still might best off making one though...not sure if the body lift on my truck will cause a fitment issue. No idea if my motor sits exactly the same as an H motor in a stock 79.

I've been exchanging emails back and forth with Cross Country 4x4.......these guys are great. I pulled the trigger on a top mount. They're about 2 months out.....they are doing 100-130 intercoolers a month!

So my sales person has a VDJ78....they are going to use his truck to make the frame for the wide nose body so they can make an intercooler to fit the 1HDT. Their VDJ intercooler doesn't use a frame....mounts to the motor. Can't do that with the H motors from what I suspect...thus the need for a frame to suspend the intercooler.

Hopefully they can build it so it matches up to that giant hood scoop on the truck.

Finished up the winch install finally. Installed a Master Pull synthetic line on the Warn M12000 and some Factor55 stuff. Need to get on building the second battery mount so we can hook things up.

I've been attempting to tune the HDT.....slowly getting there. A bit more smoke than I thought I'd have with the truck....happening at low RPMs....like when you go around a turn in 2nd or when the truck shifts into 4th(the rpms drop way down to 1200 or so.....smoke up until 1900-2000rpms.....then it cleans up). Not sure how or what to adjust to stop that. Maybe nothing is wrong with it.....the diesel world is somewhat new to me so I have to learn that smoke isn't the end of the world

This was my test area for the off-road portion of testing and tuning today. Tested out the 4wd system today....we did a part time conversion on the transfer when it was out. Everything worked just fine....

This truck is just so "complete" on so many levels. Love your builds. If I didn't have a wife and three kids to consider this would be my aspiration for a solo adventure Cruiser... Hats off!

Well hopefully the next few builds will be just as interesting. There will be 'higher capacity' version of the solo adventure Cruiser.....one with 2 more doors and a small pickup bed

Had a chance to stretch the legs on a few of the trucks this weekend for a Toyota meetup....not very many trucks at this one compared to the last. Needless to say there were no other 79s, 75s or even 45LVs....

Time for an update I suppose, right @Gun Runner 5 ?

I can't stop driving this truck. I haven't driven any of the other trucks for at least 3 weeks. Longest I've gone driving the same vehicle in a long long time. I'm going to force myself into something else this week.....maybe

I love this thing....between the diesel swap, the part time conversion, Dobinsons suspension(HUGE upgrade) and 34s...it's just a really solid rig. The interior changes with the gauges/headunit and additional sound deadening make it even more comfortable....especially with the heated Scheelmann seat. It's still the old truck I know and love but it's way way different now. I have always had a soft spot for this truck....now it's even softer.

I was able to dial in the tuning to where I think things are good. Probably using a bit more fuel than I should but I really like how well it goes(gets up and moves out for a big heavy truck). EGTs are under control. Boost is at 15psi. It sounds really cool too.

My first normal tank was about 14.7mpg.....not good in the world of diesel but I'm driving around a house. With a tire on the roof. Not good aero at all.

We did it's first big run up to some trails in good ol' boring FL to look at a dirtbike track that we were able to play around on...

Testing out 4L with the new lower gear ratios...

This rear end is going to change....starting to collect the parts for a spare tire swing out. It's time to get that tire off the roof. Kind of excited to be able to have a trasharoo or something on the back of the truck too.
