Is this 1975 FJ40 worth $40,000?? Would really value your input, thank you!

I'm looking for a nice FJ40 but can't spend the money on one from TLC4x4, etc.

I stumbled upon this one and the price point is around $40k. I'm wondering what you see wrong with this one and if its worth the price?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

It looks like rust was painted over on the underside of the tub in that one picture.

The seller stated that the frame and chassis was sand blasted. I don't have a picture of the body, here is the frame. Thoughts?

Says $49,000 on the ad, and NO, IMO it isn't worth that. I second checking with @overton. It looks really nice thats for sure.

But when I see stuff like this...it makes me wonder a little.

Rounded brake line nuts, rust on lines, overspray on booster and wire harness. A few random wires hanging around.

Not sure how much bodywork has been done and the quality of it.

Good imput. At $40k does that sound better than $49k? Or still too high?

I just can't find anything in the 1975+ era that looks as decent. Body work seems to be fairly decent. Did you see the link?

$40k is way high. People are being nice. It looks decent....for now.

Think about it like this, would you pay $40,000 for a new truck that had over spray on obvious parts, damaged fasteners from the factory and rust coming though the paint?
They want perfect facotry new level restoration money but there are a ton of cut corners. Would you trust them that they rebuilt the engine to factory new? Trans?

Still too high. While it looks really nice, there are some things I don't like, which may be nothing. I don't like the T-case and things like that painted all one color. Seems kinda "lazy" for lack of a better word on a massive rebuild like this. Others have brought up patches and I've mentioned the bodywork. Without a bunch of documentation, I'd be leery and want to see more. $40k IMO, should look REALLY nice, no overspray, no questions etc.

I have no affiliation, but this at $31K consigned is a much better deal IMO. I pretty much only dislike the rims.

There's rust next to the tailgate latch and at the welded seam on the right side of the sill.

They didn't clean up the knobs, look at the rust. Also something wonky around the light, tape residue? It looks like they didn't even remove the light when they painted. There's overspray on the radio for ****s sake.

More rust. I doubt they even took it apart.
It used to be yellow. Looks, more rust.

Good luck with the search. I'm also seriously in the market and debating whether to spend that kind of money on someone else's "restoration" efforts or buy something in the sub $20K range that's drivable today but a good frame-off candidate for 2 to 3 years from now when I retire.

Edit: I agree with Lazylfarm that the 75 that Overton has on consignment looks pretty nice. For whatever reason I want a 76+ or I would be talking to him about it.

looks Sketchy. what color was it originally? Are there any pics b4 the work was done. Corroded/Rusty fuse box fuse holders. Wiring in the back looks ruff and hacked. I believe the exhaust is wrong. i think the muffler is suppose to go across the back below the heat shield, which is painted body color. I think they removed the body to paint the frame and did minimal tear down on the tub. Some things are shiny and new but others are old and dull. Painted the fan housing and re installed a rusty looking blower motor. On the inside, where the heater hoses comes thru the fire wall looks ruff too. As mentioned b4 some painted and non painted grommets, rusty nuts and bolts along w/shiney ones too. Disc brakes are nice upgrade, but no backing plates. I think the clutch master is aftermarket too.

Look at the rust pitting on the frame brace in the upper right. Wireing has been poorly wrapped in electrical tape. It's already chafed though or fallen off. Wtf's up with the bare wires just hanging out?

I wouldn't even spend $10k. Seriously. This just looks like they spray painted it and slapped it back together.
