How rare is it to find a 80 series LC with factory lockers?

This thread has been in the back of my mind as I am trying to sell my locked 93 and wondering if the "premium" I've set on it is too high or not.

Can't speak for your area, but I'm wondering what the "premium" is between very comparable vehicles in mileage/condition with and without lockers?

I was curious about the cost of ARB lockers, I'm sure prices vary, but Google yielded a cost of around $900 per axle for the locker. If someone doesn't know or can't do the work, I factor $500 per axle to install (around 4 hours per axle install at $125/hour, I assume that's reasonable). The cost for that jumps to $2800 for ARB lockers and install.

Is that way off from the premium you're seeing in your area for comparable vehicle's?

I am intrigued..... something similar happens in the MR2 world - an 88-89 supercharged factory car is somewhat hard to find, to build an NA car into an SC car is usually cheaper than buying a factory car - that's largely because the SC owners "know" what they have and drive the market, and while there are tons of NA owners who "know" what they have, the market prices are influenced much lower by the NA owners who don't give 2 s***s about it being an MR2 and just see a 150k or 200k mile 30 year old car.

I'm making the parallel because you can find dirt cheap (generally not well maintained) 80 series, and then you find those 3-5x more expensive.... you don't see that with 60 series because primarily those who just had one as a vehicle and offloaded it cheap are diminishing..... the 80 series is sort of in that weird age....

Yeah you're likely in it 3 grand for f/r arbs

I have own several 80 all locked and dont see it as that uncommon. People that say they dont need them is because they dont go places that require them not because they are ALL THAT.:flipoff2:

As for the hijack I have owned all most as many ARB as I have Factory lockers and they ALL have their issue. I would still own both rather than not having either. :D

Round here the price for locked vs non locked was about that same for equivalent mileage vehicles when I was shopping. Figured I would go locked rather than spend another $3k on aftermarket. I also found non-locked to be much more common, out of the 10 or so trucks I looked at only 2 were locked.

Rarity probably really depends on the area. Areas with more severe winters probably saw more locked trucks being sold so there are more around.

I bought an unlocked 80 and added ARB lockers. In my opinion, the ARB lockers are superior. You'd be smarter buying an 80 in A-Plus condition and adding lockers than accepting less just to get lockers. Considering the vast number of 80s without lockers, you have a better percentage bet to go that route.

Another consideration. If you are going to lift the truck and run larger tires, you are probably going to regear anyway. If you are going to regear, you might as well add lockers while you are in the diff.

I think it is funny when people say they dont need them. Sure maybe you dont. But i find i can clear obsticals with them with a lot less wear and abuse on both the truck and the trail. I love how gently i can crawl over stuff rather than hammering stuff. Just my opinion.

Dude! What's the point of wheeling gracefully? Aren't we supposed to throw rocks, dig holes, and break parts as often as possible?? See the TRAL link in my sig. We pick up the trash, put up the route # signs, digitally inventory the trails, and do massive repair projects by hand. All the work that F S no longer has the budget to do. Mother Nature beats up our trails pretty good, so we work to preserve them and keep them open for the next guy.

I can't tell if you are serious or not but what you just said triggered something that I was trying to figure out for the last week or so.

So, my gal and I decided to fly out west for a 9 day run from Seattle, up and over through the Olympic Peninsula and then down 101 all the way to Orick. I hadn't been out that way since the free wheeling 90's and I was happy to see that it is mostly how I left it. I would say that the part of Washington that is along the Strait of Juan DeFuca is really, really nice.

OK, so here is the thing I wasn't prepared for. What is the deal with the bro-dozers and all the huge RVs and trailers? I thought there would be Cruisers all over the place, but I only saw 3 the whole way. The whole dune buggy thing is lost on me.

I'm being sarcastic about needlessly damaging trails. I forgot to plug in the cute little imoticons. I'm being serious about volunteers doing the work that Federal Land Managers no longer have the $$$ to do. I've been doing volunteer work for BLM first and now FS for about 20 years. Both my Piggy and my 80 have been locked on both ends so I can Tread Lightly as much as possible, even on some pretty technical trails.

No need to wreck stuff. I prefer that.

I don't have a place or need for crawling over rocks and stuff. What I mostly need is a quiet cruiser that runs really good and is for the most part stock. I couldn't bring my truck on the plane. It would have been nice to have it though. Instead, we had a Sentra. We did just fine for two weeks out of it, but it's a disposable car.

There is a push to do gas math and invent new routes along our coast and re-fit as needed.

The number I have seen most was about 15% of 93-97s had the locker option. From my experience that seems about right, too.

I know that this is in no way a scientific pole, but when i was looking to buy my LC, 2 1/2 years ago, the first 20 trucks i looked at, only one of the 20 was locked. One thing i will say for sure, the price for a clean, rust free, 3 X locked truck has definitely been MOVING UP over the past year, will this trend continue, only time will tell. But if we look at basic supply, and demand, my guess is, the days of buying 3 X locked trucks for $3500 bucks may soon be over.

Gee, kids, are we just a wee bit off topic??? The OP asked if OEM lockers are rare?? Did not ask for opinions, experiences, or options. Those topics have already been beat to death!!
Gee, your post is not adding anything to what the OP is asking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)
Everyone here has one except for me

I"m with ya pal.

When I was looking for my 80 it seemed that the locked ones were a bit more beat up and high mileage.
I probably should have waited for that creampuff garaged and locked 80 being sold by the well off elderly couple, but I couldnt wait any longer. But I did find a medium mileage rust free California truck who's paint buffed right up to like new and had about 20-30 pages of records. So Im happy :)

I paid $1k for my locked 40th but it was a longtime buddy that just wanted it gone. Needless to say I didn't haggle with him any. Around here I would say about a $2k difference in price.

7-10% got them.

I have a really rare single locker that doesn't even require a switch.

It's called the Aussie edition.
