I getting ready to fill my transfer case that was drained months ago and had very little oil in it. I need to know how much oil to put in it. I have included some pics but a brief description. It is an 1971 Fj40 with a ramjet 350, nv4500 5 speed trans, AA adapter and the original trransfer case. Any thoughts?

When I opened up my h41 fill hole a little drips out telling me it’s full. But when I look down from the top through the shifter I can see pretty far down there even to the reverse gears and I don’t see any fluid. When I originally filled this transfer box a few months ago it didn’t take the full 6.6 liters. It took a little over 5.

I am tempted to pour some more in there from the top. Is there any harm in adding a little more fluid above the fill cap?

Or Should I trust the fill cap and leave it alone?

I’d trust the bolt hole that’s 3” up the back (or some like that). If you fill it till it starts to dribble out there it’ll be golden.

You could satisfy your temptation by draining a little and adding a little from the top till it's full, trusting the fill plug.

You can remove the fill plug on the side of the tranny. then fill the tranny thru the shift tower. Stop filling when gear lube comes out the fill hole. In your pic, you are looking at the shift rails.

Thanks everyone one. I think I am seeing the convergence on trusting the fill hole on the side. I also saw another post that if you over fill you are risking having the transmission oil retain air and turn foamy.

So I think I will try filling from the top just because I have it open and it’s easier to pour in from there. But I will leave the fill plug open and when it starts to come out I will stop and let any excess drip off.

All the best to everyone with their input.
