But ........ I think I might just cap mine with a sealed clear Plexiglas cover, seal the drains, fill it water, and grow sea monkeys in there ........ ;)

You gave me an idea. I'm going to make a cover with a radiator cap so I can fill it with some good tequila, then run the drain tubes up behind the dashboard to a beer tap.

Hmmmmmmm .......... me thinks I'll combine our ideas for that space.

Drunk sea monkeys might be an exhilarating snack whilst on the trail!

Gotta use Sake though ......... ;)

I honestly think if a guy was to take out the guts in that space that are not needed and seal it off on the bottom where it goes into the cab, it would make a nice small storage area. You could put shorter tools and whatever inside. This could be done and it could still look like a cowl vent just instead of being capped off, underneath could be a storage area. I was looking at mine and thinking about it.

Stuff that you didn't need often. Giant first aid kit maybe, or bottles of spare fluids/oil. It's already just an empty box with a welded bottom on a '76.

I don't know anything about a 76 but yea its a good place to stick stuff that you don't Need often. If a guy was able of coming up with a hinged system that was lockable you could put stuff you needed more often in there with the easy access

Mine is gone. Pulled the vent grate, cut reinforcement tabs and a top plate and welded it shut. You can't even tell it was ever there. No more leaks ever. I'm not afraid to change original, if original was poorly designed in the first place. Mine had probably been leaking for some time before I bought it too. Part of my trans cover was rusted completely away! Fixed that too.

the noise of things shifting/bangin around in there would drive me nuts. sure you could pad evrything, but with all the padding you would have to do to keep things from oving around, it doesn't seem worth the effort to make it a storage spot.

Why would it be loud? You put stuff in other boxes inside your rig right? That hole is definitely big enough to put a bag of tools in, or oil.

true, but I try to load so that it isn't bouncing around in the boxes. I didn't say loud, just that the banging noise would drive me crazy. but that is just me. I don't like noises that don't belong.

OEM drain tubes are still available but the doors are not. The weather stripping and door were sold as a single piece, the weather stripping was not available separately.

or just leave the truck in a place where it doesn't rain

FWIW, some late model 40's (I'm talking late 1984) don't have that cowl vent - looks like it was getting phased out.
There's a few of them here.
I'm sure you were wondering about that.
cheers

Hmmm,
"Louvers" are here on middle east spec vehicles to 1984 except for some 1984's that I have seen.
Didn't know they got shut down on your side.
I have a 1983 with cowl / louver (also middle east spec).
Maybe my '84 was originally built for the USA and got hijacked by Somalli pirates?
Value is up!
Been wonderring about that 'cause with cowls go up to revision 80 and that covers me.
cheers

Mine is an 8/76 and had it until Saturday when I filled it in the a plate and some bondo.

Bumping this thread to ask if anyone knows how hot it gets inside the space under the cowl.

The posts above mentioned turning this space into storage which then made me think about how we cook hotdogs on our snowmobiles....

Not hot to cook.

The cavity is actually inside the cab up under the dash and sure hope it's not hot enough to cook in. The tool box under the driver's seat up to 9/72 would be a better place to cook when exhaust has been rerouted above the skid plate, which is a larger percentage of 40s.

It seems the original poster is long gone. This thread would make it easier to search if the title was cowl vent instead of hood vent. Not sure a moderator could change the title.
