Dan, I have a 3B HG from my kit if you need one quickly...

Had the truck towed down to my sisters garage. Took everything off the right side of the engine in preparation of pulling the head next week.

beno has a head gasket kit coming in, only question left is precups. Can't get them quickly from Totota, and don't see any upgraded (stainless?) ones for sale. Advice? Should I work about them while I have the head off?

Hi Dan,

Bummer about the HG. Hope you get it back together soon.

I ordered my stainless steel Pre-Cups from Roo Dogs in Australia and got them (to my door) within a week here in the U.S. Also, I would replace the pre-Cups and mill the head once you have it out:

Below is the link to order them:

Good luck!

Bummer about your HG! At least you weren't out in BFE when it happened. I will be back in town on Wed if you need a second set of hands.

Dang! I'm back to work next wednesday. But I should have it back together maybe Monday the 21st, so we can find time after that to go for a spin....

Got to keep you pumped about yours, you know.

Dan

BTW the precups won't be here until later in the week at the earliest. I'm hoping to pull the head and have it dropped off at the machine shop on Tuesday. Do they machine the head and then press in the new precups, or install precups and then machine it?

Dan

you have to make sure the precup protuding thickness is same or slightly less than the head.
best to get the precups, install and test before any maching is completed.
<so i seem to remember from the 3B heads i did in the distant past.>

I have read that you install pre-cups and then machine the entire assembly.

I am in the process of doing this to mine...

Good luck!

nice build, I got a few ideas and I saw you do them better in this forum, than I did them in my brain. Thanks

sorry to hear about the HG. Your old 2F is running great. Perhaps your FJ40 is getting back at you for tearing its heart out?

No, the 40 is happier with the 3B/Turbo. It's just purging itself of the last non Toyota parts... ;)

Let's meet up when I have it back down there, so you can judge for yourself how much happier it is with the 3B. :)

Dan always bringing it to the cusp...

;)

Did you get the gasket kit? Are you ready to roll sir?

:)

I pulled the head today. Easy as pie (literally did it during a little grill session at my sisters house).

Here's where I believe it is failed. When cranking, the engine was spitting out of this area from what I could tell. Also, the #3 and #4 Glow Plugs were really wet, compared to #1 and #2. Also, the aftermarket valve cover gasket SUCKS. Nice new Toyota one in the care package from beno...

The head is off! See any obvious signs of the failure? I don't from this view.

And the #3 and #4 cylinder area of the head and HG. Still no obvious failure, but I'm confident this is somehow bad.

All of the precups are cracked.

Still waiting on the new ones to arrive. Is it common to ceramic coat them? Does it help keep them from cracking? The FSM says you simply install them into the head (presumably after machining) so I'll take the head to the machine shop, and have them measure the ones that come out. Then if the new ones are too "tall" they can be machined down to fit.

They can be above or below the surface of the head 0.0020" either way. I'll talk to the machine shop about it if they haven't arrived tomorrow by the time I have to drop the head off.

The engine surface scraped of the old HG. Is it normal to have the sleeves protrude so much from the block? Any telling signs here? I see no pitting to speak of, so that's a good sign.

Did you verify the torque on the head bolts after the turbo install?
