Builds Here we go (FJ-40 getting a 3B/Turbo/H55f)...

Well I have to say that if you come by my place with that thing I might end up putting a Diesel in mine! Really nice build Dan. I just skimmed through this thread and now my head is spinning with ideas that I don't have the time or money for.

You're safe on that one now. The 40 is back in NM until probably CM next year or so.... At least, until you meet the two other B series 40 series running around the Denver area...

But really, I wouldn't spend more than a few pennies if the 2F has a problem, cheaper and better to just go 3B or 13BT IMHO.

Dan

I would do it in a heart beat, but my knowledge and fab skills are nowhere near where yours are and time is an issue. I love the sound of Diesel! Funny thing is I still haven't checked the compression on the 2f yet. It drove just fine when I drove it home, but who knows. I hear what your saying about spending more than a penny. I looked at complete rebuild kits. Holly $mokes! Not cheap parts! The biggest problem is that I have a class date at Emirates on the 777 for March 2nd. I am in a mad rush to get this thing buttoned up by then so I can ship it over. Actually I haven't decided if I am even going to take the job yet. Tough to give up the chill life in CO to go live in the Sand Pit!

I was reading your thread and I really like that metal tech cage. I have been debating taking off my wheel well support brackets for the OEM roll cage. I know there is rust under there and I can even see a little pin holing in the tops of the wheel well. I have been finding myself rushing a bit and trying to cut corners, but I decided this morning that I need to go back and remove those suckers and sand blast before I have the underside coated with liner. I don't think those would hold worth a damn in a roll over anyways. I guess I need to decide soon since it looks like I will need to do a bit of welding on the frame before I paint it. My concern is the tire clearance in the rear. I plan on running BFG AT's 33x9.5, but if I ended up with the MT in a 33x 10.5 would there be good clearance? I have the same 2.5 OME lift. I seriously need to stop reading mud because it just gives me more ideas that take more time than I have !
If I do get the MT cage I will probably just get a prefabbed one since time is critical. However I would consider removing the cross member behind the front seats. Just seems like overkill. Could I talk you into supervising my welding to the frame of the cage support/tie in? I have no welding skills or training other than a book and trial and error with an emphasis on error! Seems silly to buy a cage if it isn't welded to the frame properly. Are you in Denver or up In Idaho Springs?
One more question. How does the powder coat in the oven workout? Could I get away with doing it in my kitchen oven or will it wreck it? Bad fumes/vapors? I have no 230V or space in the garage for a cheapy used oven.

Everyone likes their cakes and roasts to be subtly flavored with setting paint gas-off.

Again, Dan, this is one of the coolest 3B swaps on 'Mud. Great work!

Just a nice 5,000 mile update...

Truck still rules. I drove it from NM to CO yesterday in preparation for Cruise Moab 2012.

Such a pleasure to drive.

Something changed though. It has higher EGTs, and worse mileage than the same drive a year ago (31mpg vs. 23). I suspect the turbo is having an issue. Either way...

Didn't you turn up the fuel?

ummm, bucking a head wind? driving a touch faster?
all makes a difference

sweet ride

Nope. No wind yesterday to speak of. And same speed. The same exact trip (stopping at the same gas pump even) took the same amount of time (well, it was 15 minutes longer yesterday, but I had to stop once for a few minutes to make a phone call.

Didn't you turn up the fuel?

The fuel hasn't been turned at all (up or down) since I made the same trip last year.

The other reason I suspect something is going on with the turbo is it occasionally seems to "stall" instead of building boost. I know what a compressor stall on an axial flow compressor in a gas turbine engine feels like, and it sounds a lot like that, but obviously a turbine engine is the entire engine, in this case the compressor stall would then be going through the engine, so it's an apples to oranges comparison.

I have the spare turbo with me, and I will probably try swapping it just to see if there's a difference.

Either way, this thing is so sweet to drive. I need to build another one for the :princess: and me. Someday (after I rebuild the 45, and get a diesel in the Guzzler, and build the house.....)....

Is it running a muffler? That's weird that you saw that, b/c that's exactly what I saw with mine in about the same mileage. I would check all the usual stuff....fuel filter, air filter, tires, intake tube for collapse, and I wondered if carbon build up in the exhaust in mine changed things. I was shocked at the thickness of carbon in the pipes. I suspected the muffler has collected quite a bit, but I haven't pulled it to check that out.

Raise the fuel Dan, it will drop EGT and possibly help on mpg. If it doesn't drop the EGT, put it back to what it was. Do a before and after test to be conclusive in EGT variation.

Cool. I will give that a shot too.

Never mind.... Found the problem.

The Head Gasket failed last night as I pulled into the driveway. So, no CM for the 40 this year. I took the faux-lux instead and will be in Moab in a few hours.

Bummer, but good to have it poop out safely in the driveway.

See, this is why I should always give in to my "while I'm in there" thoughts. ;)

Sorry to hear Dan !
Have you confirmed that it definately is the HG ? I recently had strange symptoms bugger me around for a more than a month and eventually it turned out to be non re-torqued headbolts by the PO after a rebuild that he did 8K kms before selling it to me. Unfortunately the good news came too late to save Olive from a very difficult engine swap decision ...

Meh. It's just a HG. If I'm good, I will have it back on the road this week (depends on parts--I have most of next week off from work).

Wayne: I'm sure thinking that the decrease in mileage was probably the earliest indicator of it.

I can see the exhaust/coolant/oil spitting out between the #3 and 4 cylinders, at the HG. Pretty easy diagnosis when it's like that, really.
