I noticed that the freespool/clutch knob was stuck and probably frozen, so I opened up the top half of the winch to find no oil in it :(
The date plate on the winch is LM8 which translates to a December 13, 1978 built date! I was 8 years old when they made it.

Anyway, I need to figure out how to get the clutch mechanism freed up or replace it with a new assembly.

I managed to free up the rusty clutch mechanism with some penetrating oil and a crowbar. I will probably just order a new one from Warn.

Some update on the winch. I soaked the rusty clutch bits in a plastic bowl filled with Evaporust and they came out looking rust free. I was really surprised by how well it worked. Anyway, I buttoned up the winch and filled it with oil and am now working on converting the old solenoid pack to an Albright type contactor (rated at 500A).

Check out the original Prestolite motor:

I also welded a dedicated ground stud onto the motor body. The early motors grounded to one of the two long screws that hold the motor to the winch. This will provide a better ground path since I'll be running a ground cable back to the battery.

I also replaced the stock ancient 4 pin Warn socket (originally designed as a trailer light socket). On a tip from my buddy @ginericLC, I bought a Superwinch 30' wired winch remote that came with a socket. Got it on Amazon for significantly less than a Warn. The cool thing was that the plug had all the correct wires/connections for the new contactor (SuperWinch sells their own).

nice dave. new wires look good! have you tried it yet? BTW, it's @ginericLC not @genericlc :)

Thanks. I'll fix that.

It's still on my work table. I'm going to need some help installing the bumper and winch. Must be 150 pounds all together.

let me know, I'll pop by to help. I know how heavy those 8274s are.

Also, I made all the wires using one of those lug crimper tools that you use a hammer with. Worked great and was cheap.

What's the scoop on that tool?

Got a part number?

This beautiful weather we're having has got me motivated. I finished with the AC bracket and mounted the compressor. Things are really tight, but I think I can make it work.
