We started striping down the engine getting ready to pull it. Here is the start of the afternoon and where we made it to. Getting closer.

We also found that one of the cam cap bolt heads had sheared off. I wonder if this has anything to do with the timing chain gear failure? We are going to keep an eye out for the bolt head as we get further into the engine.

looks sweet nice find & I a like the 80s with out the flairs

Well, we found the missing cam cap bolt head that was sheared off. It is stuck under the cam lobe on the exhaust side right behind where it sheered off its cap. At least now I know what caused the engine to seize up and break the timing gear. Once we get the engine out I will get the cam out and see how much damage has been done.

That's a helluva truck for $500. Good find and good rescue!

I agree, rebuilt one last year with my Son and daughter and created some memories.

I just bought this FZJ80 off of eBay knowing that the "top and bottom were no longer connected." 292k miles but every thing work except the engine. Yeah, sure, right. So I took a chance. It was not expensive as the seller took my low ball offer. Maybe that should have been a warning. I went to meet the seller did the title transfer and had it shipped 230 miles back to my work shop. Today my son and I dove into the top end of the engine and here is what we found, or did not find. Plans are now to pull the engine and get either a low milage one from a wrecking yard of a remaned long block. I don't think that it will be cost effective to rebuild the engine that I have. Next post, body work.

I have a complete 1fzfe in my garage I bought to do a "refresh" on. It's out of a (1996) LX 450 with 169k. I took it apart and then never got around to moving on. It's complete with engine, head, plenum, sensors etc.... if you are interested we should discuss

A quick update. We were going to just pull the engine out of the cruiser. We were not able to turn the motor over manually so we could not get to the torque converter bolts. We decided to just pull the whole drive line as it most likely needs service too.

IT'S OUT!!!
We spent that last two days getting the beast of a drive line out of the truck but it is finally out. I read how long the drive line would be ( 6 foot 6 inches) but until you see it hanging from the end of a lift its hard to imagine just how enormous the thing is. We split the transmission from the block, and yes it leaked ATF everywhere. Interestingly after we got the engine on the ground and went to remove the torque converter the engine turned over by hand easily.

You go guys!! Great job, it is a bunch of work to get that monster of a drive line hanging on a hook. Looking forward to your progress.

following along I like this, and your shop is awesome

Kicking ass! Subscribing to see as well what the details are when mine let's go! I bought mine a year ago (96,lockers) for 5,000. Spent a lot getting itstiingstring on 37's, along with a bunch of other mods, and I know mine will need some engine work, likely a head rebuilt minimally, but possible a whole eng rebuild in the next few years. Currently iI have 195k mi. on mine, and was owned by dentist who was pretty on the ball with maintenance. Whenever I have to sink money into mineiI remember that our rigs were around 50k new, sotheresthere's always going to be a bit of a pain when reaching for the wallet. Hope yours goes smoothly, for 500 bucks you're already ahead of the game! Cheers!
