I use Red wheel bearing grease on all bearings, knuckle, wheel,

MP, Moly, Wheel Bearings grease is all spect NLGI2, it's all good

Similar to the new factory spindle needle bearings the knuckle bearings are going to be in contact with the gray birf moly.

I searched for Toyota specific MP Grease but then after talking to a oil industry lubrication engineer friend of mine, I understood that the NLGI2 rating means it's all good to mix.

I didn't have any MP grease but I had a whole case of Lucas, red and tacky.

It does, it’s just a topic that seems far more confusing and vague than needed. I suspect it’s just the nature of a 30 year old truck. Not much hasn’t changed almost to a revolutionary level since 1992.

That said, I went with gray moly and it’s done. I agree with the sentiment on bearings being “spinnie” things and getting red grease - but I also consider the knuckle bearings as more twistie things. Load bearing versus speed, so gray makes sense.

If the front end unravels…welp, I won’t do that again hahaha!

One side is mostly done, I quit for the day. Back at it tomorrow. I had some surprises, both good and bad, but mostly as expected.

That's a really great way to put it. How many people have probably packed their bearings with multi-purpose crease not wheel bearing grease or use the Gray for all kinds of different stuff :hillbilly:

Good job, feels good to know how it comes apart and goes together now right, you are trail ready :flipoff2:
 
I used this on everything…the birfs, knuckles, wheel bearings, trunion bearings, and quite a bit on my shirt and pants. Did I screw up?

I'm an electrician, not a lubrication expert..... The carton says wheel bearings and CVs a burfield is technically a CV.

I recall a number of old school mud veterans. Talking about the quantity and frequency of Greece is more important than the type of grease.

I'm sure one of the more experienced old school mud veterans will have an educated opinion on this.

I use WallyWorld moly-fortified grease on everything, and my truck hasn't self-destructed yet. Grease has come a long way since 1997, it's not necessary to use different greases in wheel bearings vs. CV assemblies vs. u-joints any more.
 
Good morning to me. Where I left off yesterday…should have done one more step.

Tie rod end threads are pending trashed by the puller. Just enough out of whack that the castle not will start…then bind.

While on the clock at a shop. This is about to get really expensive waiting on parts.
 
Okay, dead in the water. Anyone keen on parts diagrams? One is bad I’m ordering all three connection points to the steering arms. McGeorge looks to have everything, but the diagram doesn’t make any sense.

To anyone considering this - if your truck is 30 years old and the parts don’t look reasonably refreshed, I wouldn’t touch it. Save up another $1000 and drop it off at a shop.
 
That illustration is NOT an 80 Series. It looks like an IFS mini truck.

Why not just buy the correct die for the tie rod end and chase the threads? If the rod end is in otherwise good working order, this seems to be the most reasonable and fastest route.
 
That’s scary. That’s the diagram per VIN. Yikes.

Although partsouq is far more helpful…except it has part numbers for everything except the ends.

Stoshu - it’s on the table. Everything is. But the time lag if it doesn’t work is a killer. Shop stall is by the hour. Plus - if this one is trashed I don’t have much faith in the other two being okay.
 
Lol - of course I have a massive tap and die set at my disposal. Which doesn’t contain the correct pieces for the threads.

For the FJ savants- M14x1.5 sound correct?

For 30 years I’ve called them tie rod ends. That doesn’t seem to be the case - whatever the ends are that attach in three places to the steering arms on the bottom of the steering knuckles.
 
Thread file got it past the bind point.

On to the next problems. Side complete, after tossing the TG spindle nut. Until the bitter end.

Has anyone else bought a cruiser outfitters knuckle kit? I have no replacement axle shaft snap ring.
 
Sorry if I am misunderstanding. Isn't 45046 (right side) and 45047 (left side) the part numbers for the tie rod ends? I order from Partsouq and Amayama and that is the way I read it. OK to slap me hard if I misunderstood post #572. I respond well to that from years of conditioning.
 
Also, front axle arm & steering steering knuckle is the kit you are getting from cruiserteq, but the axle shaft snap ring comes with the axle. Soooo....different kit? Part # for my truck 43411c. Your part # for your truck may be different....but probably the same part.
