In our WhatsApp group here in the Middle East @Mcladin recently shared a cool bit of OEM kit he picked up for his 80-series winch upgrade. It seemed the perfect garnish for my truck, especially given that I was looking for a tote to keep my winch remote and pair of gloves in.

Looks the part and even has the appropriate emblem on it for our older school cruisers. It has a nice divider inside.

I've been plugging away at little details here-and-there.

The steering wheel cap that came with mine is generally in good condition except someone obviously clamped something to it in the past. So I grabbed a restored one off Ebay awhile back. I was surprised to find that the restored one is smaller than my original.

Anyone have any light they can shed on this?
I'm going to see what I can do to restore the original... I've got a few ideas.

I picked up tranmission and transfer case shift knobs from @Diesel42 awhile bank. I love how they look with some clearcoat on them.

Details are paying off.

And finally, some GoPro shots of the interior. Saw these elsewhere on the forum and had to mimic it...

Talk about porn! I think it moved... ;)

man that 40 of yours is awesome. so clean. love the ac in the dash

SSSSOOOOO Clean...If ya want, I could send you a small rust specimen, just so you'll recall in later years, exactly what it looked like..

About time for an update...

Mine didn't come with the factory jack or tools. I snagged a set from an 80-series for 100 dirhams at the same junkyard where I got the disc-brake donor axle. The jack needed a bit of cleaning up and a repaint, so I went with yellow.

I had some nice rubber sheet sitting around (wish it were black) so I cut it up and glued it into the jack mount area...

235jackholder.jpg

And mounted the jack.

236jack.jpg

Next is the toolbag. I have the appropriate hook but need the rubber band.

Also met up with @Mcladin and @Thebedouin60 a couple months back (before it turned freakin' hot!) and we took our 40's out for a run in the desert outside Dubai. Great times and so much fun to finally roll with other 40's.

Oh! How I long for my rig to be as clean and complete as yours. The rebuild/resto stress will just melt away.

To be replaced by the "Is that a scratch?" and "How do I keep this thing clean?" stress. Seriously, its a real thing. =)

I just remind myself that I rebuilt it to use for another 40 years. It turns a lot of heads all shined up... but its more fun airing down the tires and throwing it in 4WD to play offroad.

Speaking of shining up nicely... I took it to a car show up in Dubai a few weeks back.

The night before I encountered a Mclaren in the parking garage where I was staying... had to pose for one of those "only in Dubai" type photos.

Shined her up in the parking garage...

Ran into some kindred spirits at the car show including this beautifully restored JDM BJ46...
240bj46.jpg

So cars shuffled in and parked for about 2 hours and then we all carpooled out to a restaurant/eatery area called Last Exit... about a 40 minute drive away. Interesting thing driving in caravan with a bunch of old Land Cruisers, two Jaguar E-types, several Corvette Stringrays, VW buses, and even a La Ferrari and Pagani Zonda (and much more). Yet another "only in Dubai" moment.

Anyway, the 40's posed after arriving at Last Exit...

If only "Heavy Breathing" could be depicted in one of the emoji's :D a RHD, Diesel, Registered as Classic and on top of it an LX :bounce::bounce::bounce:. Why did I miss going to this show :bang:

So I've searched quite a bit trying to find a name, part number, or any info on the end piece for the choke cable where it attaches to the carb. Mine was missing. The choke cable is there... it's clear where it should join up to the carb... but it's just a bare wire.

So I went hunting on the internet and finally found out that, among the moped crowd, this piece is called a "knarp". Anyway, after measuring the carb I determined that this piece from a website called 1977 mopeds would fit the bill. So I ordered 5. =)

110knarp.jpg

And it worked like a champ!

Now I have a working choke.

That generated a list of questions for me regarding my carb.

1. If I pull the choke all the way it closes the choke plate. That should kill the engine, right?

2. Is there a way to determine if the lower chamber (as seen in this photo) actually works under heavy acceleration?

112carb.jpg

3. And finally, what is this?

113mystery.jpg
That is a vacuum port, plugged:/ Your carby supposed to have a fast idle actuator (diaphragm) bolted to the two screws on the side Where the large diaphragm is. It is part of the olden emission controls.
Someone must have removed that from your carby. Also there supposed to be a magnetic vacuum switch to control the actuator (VSV or TP as on photo)
When the engine is hot and running high revs that port opens the actuator to pull fuel vapor from the charcoal canister that collects from the fuel tank instead of letting those petrol fumes out in the air. When the vsv were usually plugged the mechanics just removed the entire system. Sometimes the excessive petrol fumes that used to burn in the 2F now going free out in the overflow pipe behind the charcoal canister .. that is what you can smell petrol sometimes. If the overflow pipe is blocked too then no fumes but uncontrolled pressure build up in the fuel tank. A sign of that is when you go refill your fuel and remove the cap the tank does like it sneezes.. You may drill a very tiny hole on your fuel cap.

Thanks for the follow-up on this.

Actually, my 77 Gulf Spec cruiser wouldn't have had the VSV... not would this vacuum port have been there. I've since plugged it with a proper grub screw instead of a screw in the hose.

The engine/manifold/carb came out of a newer truck, possibly even a 60-series, that had the VSV and charcoal canister. I've got a return line to the fuel tank which is currently connected to nothing. I'm working on a very basic charcoal canister set-up to correct that issue.

Small details update...

Finally got the toolbag sorted. It's the toolkit from an 80-series... came with the jack.

I had been using these to hold the toolbag down:

Ordered the T100 band/hook (hook already removed in this photo)
