I really like the ability to remove the diff cover. All it is is another place to leak, and if you break the axle farther up it might be easier to remove the diff.

Here is my 2 pennies
If need be use two per side.

It was a good read and a lot of info. But I think everyone is overthinking this a bit. There is not a lot of directional force shooting this axle in or out. I think the rubber washer will do the trick and also will have a shock absorbing affect.
I will let you know when I assemble my axle.

what's up, Stumpy, you didn't scrap this projo, didjya?

Assuming you’re talking about me as I was the one to bring up the fact side loading is a concern that needs to be addressed when using a hub in a way is wasn’t intended. Stumpalama did get a reply from Trail Gear saying the hub should work but reading the email would lead me to believe that someone in the office wrote the reply and not a Trail Gear engineer.

Calculating the exact axial force loads on spline shafts is beyond my pay grade, not wanting to spread anecdotal information in Stumpalama’s build thread I can only say the load exist and one should be aware of it. No need to overthink but underthinking could lead complicated trail repairs.

Do you have any empirical knowledge on the axial direction force loads on spline shafts that you could share to help me better understand?

Not at all. My 1st attempt to straighten the axle both moderately successful, and a failure.

I was able to get the axle set up and actually was able to use the jack to bend the axle, but it kept returning to it's original orientation. Then the jack stand on the opposite side had a catastrophic failure. It crumpled and everything tumbled over onto my saw horses. it was a slow degradation and nothing was harmed.

I need to fab up a more solid support system. I have some thick square stock I will use to build axle stands. I will also need some heat... I might need to find a donor axle and just start from scratch.

keep at it!

Yeah, I'm going to knock off the original spring hangers in an effort to get a more accurate picture of exactly where the bend begins. It is pretty discrete and gradual.

In the mean time, I rebuilt and reinstalled my FJ62 PS gearbox that was dumping fluid from the input shaft seal.

How's this project going? You're not thinking of buying a fabbed housing, are you?

I still need the rosebud...and some tanks!

Hey Stump, looking forward to seeing how progress on the straightening.
Hang in there! :-)

boy, let me tell ya...I got 9 more years till the baby is legally growed-up. Just make sure to prioritize your time CORRECTLY, cause that stuff ain't free and once it's gone, it's never coming back. steel can wait...

OK, so I worked on it today and had some success, but came up against an odd issue. I fabbed up a solid jack stand out of some 1/4" 2x2 and used the jack method and ran some hot weld beads and quenched them. It seemed to work since I got it to within 1mm of dead center and was able to fit the oil seal and the spindle and the true bar would spin freely.
Thennnnnn, I turned the axle right side up it appeared as if I had not done anything to the axle. I reset the alignment bushings and it seems to work now. I ran out of time and will investigate more this week.

Alright, I'm tired of dicking with this bent housing. Despite several attempts with mixed results, I've given up on trying to straighten it and I am picking up another 40 housing this week so I can start with a known good foundation.
I really want to get this project going and I have been spending way to much time not building a FF axle. I could be done by now.

I'm still going to try to straighten this housing because I am stubborn but it will be on a "not to interfere" basis.

Go Stump! Git her done!

Land Cruiser axles do bend fairly easily, and it makes you wonder how Toyota keeps them straight when they make them, with those huge long welds everywhere.
