I am a finesse wheeler and only use the skinny pedal when a absolutely have to.

I know that stock springs are very prone, but with a little work, leaf springs can flex and still control spring wrap. Both my Jeep and my 4runner had 4-6 inch spring perches and had either a 4:1 t-case or double cases with stock and 4:1 gearing on 35's.

And there you go.. I ran stock springs, spring over with no trac bar through a couple of trails out at the hammers. The only reason my springs lived was because I did not get on the gas at all..

If need to hammer it, or are doing a throttle climb you will have problems..

I know three different people that used the long spring perches.. They ended up bending the spring perches over time..

It is one of those things that you might be able to deal with (like lockers and the old drum brake birfs) but, the problem is if you get put in a situation where you need to step on the gas to get out of... And you are left with a non functional rear axle..

Good insurance..

Uumm...I never said I didn't use the throttle. Again, I think when pulling a heavier vehicle offroad, full throttle snow wheeling, climbing ledges in Moab and yes wheeling in the Hammers, Rubicon, Fordyce etc...is going to reveal any spring wrap, I didn't have a problem. I even pulled a broke jeep out of Pritchett Canyon. I never said that I ran stock springs. I built them. Without longer spring perches.

AHHH good stuff!
I tend to be a wuss on the gas too!
Last year then on the deer valley trail, I HAD to use the skinny A LOT! With no lockers, small tires etc. Its was all I could do and I HATED it.
Like I said. Its not much effort for me to build a trac bar and have the piece of mind that comes with it.

let's see some more pics!!!!

Ill post up some pics this evening, but there is nothing too exciting going on right now.
I have the rear end out with the axels pulled, cleaned the housing a bit, split the PS spring pack, cleaned and painted the leaves and stuck in some new silencer pads and re installed it.
Now gotta do the same to the DS springs.
THEN, I can get the housing mounted so I can set the angles.
Like I said...Ill post some pics, but theyre pretty routine.
I was sick for the 3rd time this year, so I didnt do too mcuh this weekend.

Tell me about it...twice around for me...I think you gave that crud to me...but heh...you warned me!

sorry for the ignorance but who is braking there vehicles springs and parts by not using anti-wraps? is this really a common problem with other soa'd rigs? i went soa, 35" mtrs and 4.11's, but i had the original springs re-arched and i dont notice any problems in the rear, its even aussied, plus i got a turbod 3B so i would think i would notice wrap problems more. I am by no means trying to downplay the wrap problems but i dont have any first hand experience, and i am curious if its a symptom of stock with soa 60 on 35's , or a 60 with 4.88's small block chev that is on the rocks alot. I am not trying to diss anyones opinions or insult anyone but find where is the fine line where wrap starts to really be a problem. thanx.

by the way your rig sounds like its gonna be pretty sweet when you get it done chicago!

Did I miss your build thread? Rebuilding the front end, completing an SOA, buying and assembling parts, designing and building ideas, all takes time and $.

Cody, the axle wrap problem is typically more of an issue in SWB rigs like a FJ40. the length of the rear DS makes any pinion rotation much more likely to bind the U joint and snap the pinion..

On a 60 you typically have a much longer rear DS. so the effect is minimized. However, it still is very possible to get enough spring wrap to snap a pinion.

As said before, it is good insurance.

forget it... sorry, i didnt mean to imply that he wasnt doing work, more work than ive ever done to my cruiser...

but since ive already butted in, i may as well add how uncool all those exocaged runners look when they take off from a stop light and the rear axle looks like it wants to twist its way to a new home...

This thread actually is more realistic than a lot of the build threads where a guy who has all the answers just post up step by step what he is doing.

It takes a lot of dialog for the average Joe to build a rig. Throwing out ideas, asking for suggestions, weighing the pros and cons, it's all part of the process. It is also a big part of what this site is about.

Besides, those of us that know Chicago like to give him crap whenever possiable. :flipoff2:

i shoulda used more smileys, i meant it more jokingly, this is actualy a kickass thread, im jealous... and i may not know any of you guys but i can kid around to, maybe it was out of place though... im over it

Smileys are good :flipoff2:

So how is it coming? You are doing a great job so far.

Thanks Wagoneer5! Thats a great compliment from you!
Ill have the spring packs cleaned, painted and re-installed, with the new bushings, anti wear pads and greaseable shackles, and will hopefully be able to set the pinion angle and spring perches too this weekend.
Then measuring the drive shaft length for the DC drive shaft, and pulling the flange off the T case so I can have it built and also bring the diff down for the 4.88 gears. Its winding down!

Ill post some pics this eve of whats been going on with the rear end, though, its all pretty much the same stuff as I did on the front end...Lots of cleaning, though not as stressful as the front anticipating the C and T.

I found that the cold ive had for the past week is actually a sinus infection and its been kicking my ASS! Everytime I have to lean down, this sero sanguinous fluid RUNS outta my head, and the head aches have been un bearable. I finally got some anti-biotics from my ENT doc. I feel a bit better today. Its been all I can do just to get out of bed for work in the AM, then I come home and CRASH!

Thanks,

Chicago
