Picking mine up at West Marine tomorrow. Think I'm gonna put 2 in the forward coin slots and attempt to wire it turn ON when the key is in the ON position. I'll have to research that tho.

I've had one of these on my bench for a month that I picked up from Sierra Expeditions. It's a very snug fit in my 3D printed insert to go above the radio. Will need to do some light filing to get it to fit there but I've not tried an OEM cutout yet.

FYI - Bought 2, turns out they don't fit. At least mine don't. The BlueSea is .815 inches wide and the punchout is .75 inches wide. It will fit with trimming but its not a drop in fit. The other dimensions check out.

Just installed the Blue Sea 1039 in my '94. I'm piggy backing off of the cigarette Lighter for now since I never use it anyway. The unit is a perfect fit in the switch location. Thanks for pointing me to it.

Even 15mA isn't too horrible, even 1 week is only 0.015 x 24 x 7 = 2.5 AHr. Just a pain if you have a couple of them and then leave your vehicle for a month or so while out of the country... along with other things that are drawing their own 10 - 20mA... and so on...

You're right about parasitic battery loads adding up. I measured the loads on my 1997 a few months back. Here's what I found:

EFI: 2ma
ECU-B: 5ma
Dome circuit (but no dome lights on): 5ma
Scanguage: 4ma (when sleeping)
Misc (undetermined): 3ma
Blue Sea automatic charge relay: 15ma
=========================
Total: 34ma

Fits extremely tight on dash slots, but it does fit. However will not fit the coin slot without a small amount of trimming.

There are a lot of ways you could do this, the easiest way would be to piggyback of the Cig. Lighter but that's been discussed as less than ideal. The next easiest and cheapest would be to get an "add-a-circuit" inline fuse block and run it strait from the battery into the dash and hook it up with the appropriate connectors (at 5 amps you should be fine with a nice 16 gauge wire, even 18 would be okay). The best solution (if you didn't want it "on" on the time) would be to wire up a relay circuit and use the Cig. lighter as a trigger to close the connection on the relay. There are lots of good write-ups on how to wire in a relay on here and elsewhere. Ideally you would use the relay method as another circuit on a larger house auxiliary circuit block with appropriate main fuse, relays and sub fuses. (blueSea, Bussman, etc)

I have a painless wiring 2 ignition hot/1 battery hot waterproof relay kit I bought off amazon thats been pretty good to me, I use it to run an aux 12v in the back for a fridge, a CB and (for now) this usb deal. I am in the process of building a 10 circuit 5 relay bussman to take over permanent house duties soon.

There's nothing wrong with piggybacking on the cig lighter circuit. It's got a dedicated 15A fuse and is powered on when the ignition switch is in either the accessory or on position.

Just wanted to point out that the 15A "CIG" fuse is not dedicated solely to the cig lighter. All other "accessory" items (radio, etc.) are supplied by this fuse.

But yeah, it's the circuit to use for switched operation of your USB outlet.

The other thing with any of these wired and permanently powered USB chargers is to verify how much they draw when quiescent (no device plugged in being charged) since that adds to your parasitic draw... can be a consideration for folk that don't drive their vehicles too often (e.g. maybe only on w/ends etc).

At least getting rid of the stupid status LED saves you a bit of parasitic draw.

Just wire them with aux switched and a relay..... Mine (though a lower amperage unit that I don't need as my S5 isnt dual micro USB 3.0) has a silly light with the cable (for my high end product, like Samsung) always in the truck, and no draw...

Ive wired other USB outlets using a mini relay from Directed Electronics to a dedicated 15A run from the battery using the cig lighter as a trigger off the key. This one will take their place with same wiring.

0.85mA @ 12.6V

1.0mA @ 14.4V
