In addition to the great suggestions above and having owned mine since new the main preventative maintenance item i recommend is the use of OEM parts, oil & air filters / fuel filter's, UNI Joints etc in particular and especially the red long life coolant (LLC). OEM parts may be a bit more $ but the quality and peace of mind outweighs the probs caused by inferior parts .
Once you become familiar with these trucks you will realise that they are pretty simple to maintain and its fun to do so as well - except the mess with CV grease when doing the front axle !!
