Check out Austin St Onge on youtube. I've seen his posts on FB and apparently he has a good YT channel with a bunch of videos. He put a 6bt in his 80 with a NV4500 and seems to be pushing it pretty hard with 42" tires.

I came to suggest the same videos. Guy is currently on 40s with stock axles and the 6BT. Personally I'd love to have a 1HD-FT over a 6BT, but I can understand the desire to have it, being in New Zealand and the toyota diesel not exactly being rare.

I'd definitely go for the manual option if you are considering it.

Cool. Happen to have pics of the dash? I can't imagine what they do, but it the dash isn't crumbling into potato chips then it means they did a better job than factory.
Yea nah, its a bit rough. The photos don't really show all the black silicon.

The trucks been messed with a fair bit, was originally a petrol and apparently went through 3 of the dodge v8s before they put the cummins in it. And this it the second cummins its had, the first one is in a land cruiser in the south island somewhere apparently.
Cheers

Ha! Impressive, the replica RHD dash is holding up good. That kick panel below the steering wheel is crumbling because is probably the LHD part repurposed.

I've never ready anything with people being super happy with the Cummins in their 80. You see them for sale really soon after the conversion. In all honesty, my hunch is that it ruins a perfectly good vehicle. If you need more power, drop a Holden V8 in there or import a FT or FTE from Japan. You also have the V8 diesel in NZ already. Leave the cummins in the truck and make something special out of it.

To be honest Id probably rather put a Duramax in it, but settled with the cummins because there a bit easer to find and a far simpler engine. I've already got a Holden v8 in my 70 series bush truck, and anyway I want a torque monster for towing.

I did consider putting a 1VD-FTV in it but figured if I'm gunna muck around putting a different engine in it, it may as well be a bigger one.

My image of Australia/New Zealand is such that you can just walk down to the corner store, pickup bread and meat for lunch, a spare Land Cruiser, fuel, even a pet Koala, then head back home.

It truly is a magical place down under.

Perhaps in the example of New Zealand it would be sheep instead of a Koala.

Well at least the front didn't fall off.

I'm too tight to buy a NV4500 to HF2A adaptor kit, luckily some legend posted plans on how its done on the internet.

The adaptor plates you buy have a 1/4" step machined in them to align with the dodge gear box, I haven't got the gear to do that, but I hate paying people to do things I could do my self so I made it bolt on. This obviously isn't as strong but once the gear box and transfer case are bolted together it will never be a problem.

I got a wicked deal on a decent off cut of 20mm aluminum, Marked out all the holes and roughly cut it out with a skilly with an ally blade, leaving heaps of extra material on

Once I have a transfer case on the bench in fount of me Ill mock up the plate and mark out all the extra material that needs taking off.

Machining the hole to make a press fit for the seal.

Your thinking about the 4bt and the 2.8 cummins. Many people aren't happy after swapping those motors. Most people are happy with the 6bt from what I've seen anyway.

Why would anyone be unhappy with the 6bt? I've seen a few for sale here n there, but I have seen far more 4bt and 2.8 motors. The 4bt is extremely loud, and the 2.8 is underpowered for an 80 or 60 series.
I'm sure there are plenty of reasons some love it and some don't. I'm not an authority on conversions, was just offering advice. Me personally, that extra 300 lbs over a 1hdt and 600+ over an LS is enough to make me not want one. My 1hdt drove significantly heavier in the front end than my 1fze did. If I'm adding weight, I prefer it to be on armor and not my motor. Love a big diesel in a 1 ton platform, just not on an 80.
