Much better technology than the old style

For the idiots, where would you install this?
Not me tough, I am not an idiot -- more of a moron.

In any of the dash blanks (like where youe heater switch is) or coin holder slots on an 80 series

beats my ugly green plastic cigarette lighter adapter.

Yes, noticed that too. Would be happier without as well.

OK So I just called Blue Sea and talked with the designer of the 1039. The prototype models along with the first released pictures had the light. All production models have NO light:clap: Also I verified it is chipped to work with the latest Apple products to provide the faster charging available. Ya Blue Sea Ordered Now I can get away from the old under powered style with a little green light.

Note: on the ebay link 7 sold in the last hour 2 available

I see that this is a contura switch type. Do all the contura switches fit the stock 80 blanks?

Not sure, but the 1039 fit 80 blanks verified by another seller and owner of a FZJ80

^ for USB charging of devices there's various 'tricks' that the device uses to determine whether it can draw more than the nominal 500mA. One is the state of the D+/D- signal lines (various resistors tied in various ways to create the 'voltage' the device expects to see). Also the cable used CAN make a difference - e.g. whether their shield is tied to ground (0V potential) or not. You could then have a good 'charger' module, but a cable that causes the device to not charge at the higher current.

These are all tricks that have been implemented by various device manufacturers to try and charge faster than 500mA. I don't think there's an actual 'standard' that will guarantee what combination of things will ensure high current charging.

The other thing with any of these wired and permanently powered USB chargers is to verify how much they draw when quiescent (no device plugged in being charged) since that adds to your parasitic draw... can be a consideration for folk that don't drive their vehicles too often (e.g. maybe only on w/ends etc).

At least getting rid of the stupid status LED saves you a bit of parasitic draw.

cheers,
george.

The problem with some of the cheaper stuff is its not chipped for maximum output on many higher end products like Apple. BTDT

Have you bought from Monoprice?
They sell good stuff from what I have seen.
You are correct that not all chargers are built the same.
I know all the Blue Sea Stuff is Top Notch (Their niche is marine based).

I also called Blue Sea; 1 milliamp parasitic draw, the person I talked to guessed it was due to the built in EMI filtering.

The specs on the page linked lists parasitic draw @ 1mA.
