Get a small faced one that attaches to the steering column and get one that only goes up to 4,000 RPM. Your swings will be greater and easier to read.

I have a small VDO tach mounted in my cruiser, no real complaints about it.

I just mounted the autometer tach listed above. Install was easy. I used this billet mount to put it on the steering column (1.5”) - I was going to cut the dash but decided against it. @Mopdog has a nice kit if you’re looking for an oem look. Will post a picture later.

I'll be trying an FJ60 tachometer with simple custom fabricated housing for my '71 FJ40 build, column mounted.

Mosley has some custom Speedhut gauges for the FJ60 that look great. Maybe they can do a stand alone tach? It'd look "more Toyota".

I have these. 60 series tacho fitted to aftermarket 40 series style faceplate

Those are top notch for sure. But those require a hole to be cut in the dash, which some are reluctant to do. Having an option of a column mount would be great.

In case anyone is unaware of it, on the stock ignitor coil is a lead for a tachometer. Just crimp on a male bullet plug on the wire from the tach, plug into the lead, and you're good to go. On the pic below that I stole from the interwebs, the lone female bullet plug lead hanging down is where the connection is made. On my '77, if memory serves, the wire is blue. Feel free to check the schematic.

There didn't seem to be enough real-estate for a column mount for my tach so this is what I did. I mounted an aluminum bar stock under the emergency brake handle mount and mounted the tach to that.

I have a V-8 conversion and my tach choice had to do with compatibility with any engine that was used and will work with a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engine.

Glad I found this thread! It was nice to see pics of installed gauges. I just ordered up the 4k Autometer unit. I almost went with a ISSPRO but the autometer was a compete unit with a pedestal mount ready to go.

Do you know where I can source the faceplate? Would be great to run a 60 series diesel tach in my Fj40 12HT swap.
Here as well.

Nice tachs some of you are sporting. Not trying to throw shade on anybody, but OP didn't say if he was running the original strait 6 or has a swap. How 'bout the rest of you? If you've got an engine swap, I get it.

Toyota's later factory tach is admittedly superfluous with its small face and heady 4K redline. I put a RAC tach from Pep Boys on my first car, a 1962 Chevy II, with its tiny 6 banger. The tach didn't make it go any faster, but to a testosterone leaden 16 year old it was fun to watch the needle go up and down. At mine and Miss Scarlets age anything approaching redline is a recipe for disaster. Have a nice day fellers and keep those tachs going up and down.
