Picked up a redneck 40 today, stuck it in a corner of the yard so didn't get much done, but yesterday I was able to split the engine/tranny after work. Censored word, censored word.

I've searched around here for some pictures of how others have mounted this engine on their stands. Seems that there is a lower pan part... I think...

EG-76 says mount it and I can definitely mount it but which thread (hole locations) have you guys used. Do you have any pictures.

I'd rather look like a fool by asking than do it wrong and drop the block or crack it. I will definitely go grab some grade 8 hardware...

Thanks... pictures coming soon.

I used the transmission bolts that held up fine, not sure it was the best thing but I did the same thing as you, bought truck with bad motor and swap in another factory unit. It was a cool experience for sure and honestly not as bad as I thought.

Super helpful! Thanks 2FP!

Bunch of updates of this mornings work. Got a hot date tonight with my wife of 13 years... and after this update will help my oldest boy with a lego rebuild :).

For any 80 series owners that bought an engine with the crank bolt still on it. Here is my recommendation (takes 2 people) but comes off quick with the right leverage. (this is for those that don't have a uber cool impact)

I have a hoist double wrapped around the crank pulley, but you don't need that.

1. Put your socket one
2. Put your ratchet on and get a piece of pipe (long) right here you see 1 5/8 top rail fence pipe
3. Get a piece of strong pipe and wedge it between one of the 4 inner bumps and place on top of the socket
4. The image of the pipe locations didn't work, we had to put them at 10 and 2 and bam it worked.
5. NOTE: i had the tension from the roof hoist on the front of the pulley because we did have to apply some weight to the front of the engine and I'd hate to break the engine stand and have it all come crumbling down, I'd recommend doing this on the ground with the engine blocked up on wood if you don't have this option.

Oh and that thing I had on there in the pictures bent so get a good piece of 1/2 -3/4 inch pipe to fit in there.

Next segment - Was able to get to the oil pump seal easily with the engine out

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/72514-how-replace-oil-pump-seal-w-pics-9.html

Even with full access to the front of the engine and applying the techniques in that thread, was only able to get 2 screws out. Others had to be drilled

I don't have the gaskets for the engine yet but there are tons of things to do while waiting for more parts.

Here you can see that the cover cleaned up nicely :)

I tried to put the seal back on, but it was too stretched out, so I did the best that I could and got the top part good... so no dirt gets in there.

I was debating on painting the block, but it didn't come painted from the factory and no one will really see it so I opted to just clean it. Here is a section that I cleaned up. I think it came out nice.

Nothing Pesky about a PHH (Pesky heater hose) when the engine is out :bounce:

And no one should wrench without wrecking their knuckles...

K, enough for now.

looks like fun.... but save the knuckles. spend $60. It's on clearance now...

Oh wow, yea... thats a great price but would it have loosened this crank nut? I've had one before that leaked but I chucked it and now just use my 18v Dewalt for items. There was one bolt I needed to get to with the ratchet. Thanks for the heads up though!

Little more progress:
Got the engine block cleaned up a little better
Sandblasted and painted some hard parts
Put some paint on them... I just picked a can out of the cabinet... thought it was white, but guess it was read so all the hard parts will be red.

Last ones till tomorrow, my parts didn't come today, so will just continue cleaning things up. Once the parts come in I will pull the head, inspect, do the head gasket etc.

I noticed when I pulled off the water pump water came out. I'd like to get all the water out of the block before flipping it and doing the oil pan gasket. Any tricks to doing this?

Also someone came by for a part and showed me his 93 K294'd rig. Crazy hood emblem. It lights up.

Don't forget to remove the oil cooler and clean the radiator coolant crud that settles in there.

Thanks! Did it thanks to your recommendation!

I'm happy, look what showed up!:clap::clap::bounce::clap:

Parts wait - over.... now to go to Chucky Cheese with 6 kiddo's

Back from the Big mouse place... 6 little ones running around having the time of their life wore me out. But I had enough energy to open the box and look at some nice clean new parts.

Tomorrow, my goal will be to get the PS Pump rebuilt and maybe painted up (RED). I'll post up some pictures if I gett'r done. I think we are long overdue for a video too, but wow, it would be boring....

Good job. Curious, were there lots of sandy grit crud settled in there?

Have you had a chance to inspect the main and con rod bearings yet? Though I hate to add more s*** to your plate but it'd provide a peace of mind if you just look at couple of random bearings to see if they're not grooved. If the PO was on top of his/her oil change schedule, you shouldn't see anything glaring.

Just as a FYI, my '97 had grooved con rod bearings but very smooth main bearings. All con rod bearings were replaced. My oil change and the PO oil change schedules were good.

Sorry if I missed it but are you doing a HG job too? If so, take the timing cover off and change out the plastic slipper things for the timing chain. They tend to wear over the time due to the timing chain rubbing on them. Again, simply a job for "while you're in there"....

Yes... sandy grit... just a little... there was more collected at the bottom of the water pump location.

Thanks for more stuff, you put me back a week because I had to order more gaskets :flipoff2: Its ok though, cause I forgot other stuff too and ordered it up tonight... delay delay delay... doh.

I didn't check the bearings, I have to drop the oil pan to do this right? I haven't gotten there yet.

Re the head gasket... I have it and all the parts to do it, however the engine is so clean and I'm having a hard time bringing myself to do it. One of my good friends works on a ton of these and he said some head gaskets never go..... so I'm hemmin and hawwwin about it. The oil pan looks good too... but I don't want to hurry it along.

The front main seal looks great, I know I should do it.... yawwww

The rear main seal looks great.... again, I should do it.

On another note, Got my helper in the garage today, he pushed the 40 in and cleaned up the garage for me. and here is a little video update ;) Somewhat 80 related.

Also got started on the PS Pump rebuild. Will go get the new bearing pressed on at a local shop tomorrow for a 6 pack of beer or somethin

That's a great helper you got there....the 40 should be just about done by the time he's ready to drive!!!!

That bearing (on the third part from the left on your picture) went on really easy for me. No press needed, just some sockets and a vice..

Good progress, Mike ! Is this engine for the future Camper-mobile ?
