Well, I am on work assignment for the next few years in Indonesia and I thought I would get some things done to my 95 LC so its ready when i return. Some maint., repairs and upgrades. So, to start I just asked them to run diag on everything and they notice some smoke coming from the exhaust. Turns out I have (2) of the (6) pistons with zero compression (not sure if head gasket, valcves, etc.). They believe it will take an engine swap and they are not capable of doing that. I have no idea if this sounds right or not, or where to start. If I were to swap, thoughts on engines that fit and are sole=id performers. 90% highway use, the rest will be some light off road except for the occasion MOAB trip...not sure that helps. Any insights to get me started would be greatly appreciated.
Good day Sevro and ih8mud
Your intentions are good and could be worthwhile with a little guidance. Lots of great of information here but also some quick thinking.
I will only speak from personnel experience on a 1997 FZJ80 350K +/-.
Yes you can drive a land cruiser on 4 cylinders. Our son was driving for awhile in SLC and drove back to Denver on 4 cylinders.
Yes the idle felt and looked like it was gonna break the motor mounts.
The shop sounds straight forward. They do not work on Land Cruisers.

Engine code for EGR, No compression on one cylinder and low on another. No spark on plugs because the compression to low on two cylinders. Realization that the engine needs full compression to make everything work properly. It can limp along for a long time.

We removed the head for the second time after doing head gasket at 276K with no valve work. MISTAKE
This time removed head and took to machine shop. Two burnt valves. Found in Oregon.
Cleaned everything and reinstalled head with some new parts. Four wire splices with terminals from Ontario Canada.
The real challenge is that parts are getting harder to find everyday for the 80 series.

Long story short. The 80 is running now better than it has since we purchased in 2003.
Worth all my time to feel like a 16 year old with a rebuilt truck.
If you can do the work yourself, go for it. If not find a shop that wants to work on LAND CRUISERS.

Thank you Ih8mud for the gathering of Cruiser folks. Thanks Cruiser folks all your input.
