Looks aside, no 100 or 200 (or Heep - for that ahola that posted) is going to take the absolute abuse a well maintained 80 can handle. Basically, Godzilla mated with a tractor and the HDJ80 was born. True story.

200's? Sweet Highlander bro...

I think there is a similar version of this thread in the 60s section with lots of comments like, "the 80 is more refined but doesn't have the soul of my old 60." What is old is new again.

Am I the only Weirdo here that has an 80 and yearns for a 40?
For 200 price I could add a 40 and a shop/garage to keep both of them in.

I yearn for the 60 (owned 2), but the wife does not. :o

These improvements you felt are normal. This is what car manufacturers do, they improve newer models.

Ohh, so you've bought a 3rd Gen 2000-2005 Eclipse to get rid of that old, worse 4g63?

Vehicle models are changed due to market demands and to sell cars. That doesn't always translate to "improvements". Hugely why what is available elsewhere in the world varies from what we get - different markets.

Another example would be the pathfinder. I guess some would consider it an improvement but Nissan completely crapped on that model in my opinion.

Pathfinder mini van. It's what consumers use the vhicle for anyway, why not just give them what they want? Lol. I guess the xterra made that decision a little easier for nissan.

My dad's cousin has a 1998 LX that he bought brand new with every possible option. It has 35,000 miles on it and lives is a carpeted garage here in Los Angeles. It gets driven once a month or so. He's getting ready to quit driving soon due to age and injuries and I'm seriously considering picking it up.

One of these days, 200 owners will be complaining about the 500 series not being a true Cruiser because it's all electric. So what if it doesn't have clunky differentials to get hung up on and has gobs of torque? Land Cruisers are supposed to run on diesel or gas!

Vehicle manufacturers are usually in the business to grow profits. If cutting corners and using cheaper ingredients still sells units, then that's what they'll do. There are trade-offs all over, eg. heightened mpg, more torque traded for flimsier frame. As buyers, we get to choose what trade-offs to make. Nice thing about Land Cruisers is the level and quality of trade-offs.

I recently ran into a guy at one the local state park. He had a really nice 100. It was a mild build and well done. I parked beside him with my 80. By rights, we got to chatting. We exchanged compliments and LC stories.

End of conversation:
him 'yeah man, love the cruisers. I own a 40, 60, 80 and this 100'
me 'sweet. which do you like the best.'
him 'tough to answer but the 80 would be the last one standing. its the perfect blend of comfort and capability'
me 'so why are you driving the 100? haha'
him 'bc its my wife's and i dont want to put the milage on the 80.'

Did i mention he was a very smart guy.:)

Almost. Wife's are more expensive than LCs, but given his situation he's making due.

That 4.7 engine and the 5 sp tranny is a great combo indeed.

I have both 1997 fzj80 and a 2000 100. Both have their pros and cons, I wouldn't give up my 80 for anything. The 100 makes for a great family wagon for long trips and light off roading. When planning family road trips I still feel safer in the 80 over the 100.

:hmm: Air bags, ATRAC, 300lbs more weight, V8, . . .

I have a 1995 80 and a 2007 100 and I know exactly what you mean, but I know deep down inside that I'm wrong. The 80 feels like it could drive through a brick wall. The steering is heavy, the suspension feels beefy, and it feels heavier. I know the 100 is heavier than the 80, but it doesn't feel like it to me. The steering is crisper (almost too much power assist), the suspension is a bit too plush, and it just feels like it is a little lighter-duty version of the 80. I know my family is safer in the 100, but it doesn't have that, "I'm driving a tank!" feeling.

I also notice that nobody pulls out in front of me in the 80. It stands out and people tend to back off. The 100 just sort of blends in to the crowd. It's all stock, so maybe if/when I lift the 100 and add some armor, it will look more like a Cruiser.

An 80 with a 100 series body would be perfect. I would name it 105. ;)

Just miss the turbo, it is a RHD HZJ 105 and it is mine. Parked 25.000 km away from my home. But saturday we will meet each other! The 105 fresh serviced, i will be in the need of a service. :)

Driving is the same as in my "German" HDJ 80, just slower.
