That is what I was thinking originally. I have seen a lot of threads where they are mounted to the firewall and inner fenders. I will have a discussion with my mechanic to see if we can move it under the hood.
 
I wouldn't mount it in the truck, either - the noise isn't really all that bad, but the thing would just in the way of everything
 
Update time:

We are inching closer each week. The engine harness electrical system was tested successfully as everything was in working order.

Fuel pump - check.
Oil Pump - check.
ECU - check.
Alternator Wiring - tested good.
Electric Fan - tested good.
Legacy Toyota Harness - All systems go.


While priming the engine we discovered a small oil leak near the oil filter attachment housing. My parts guy is searching for the proper gasket. I believe this is the last obstical standing in the way of starting her up for the first time.
 
Are we ever truly finished with our 40's? Once Matt finishes up the mechanical it will be going in for final paint. I spend most of my time flip flopping on color. My paint guy and my daughter want it silver and black. She has started calling it Silver Ssssssssnake.

As far as the parts go,... I am suffering from parts selling burnout. I am in a big push to get the garage cleaned out. I need to stop buying this stuff.
 
Bigger Blue Update

If this project goes any slower I am going to rename this build, "The Blue Slug". In all fairness I have not been pushing my mechanic to move any faster since my workspace is maxed out with parts. Today a front axle trunion bearing was replaced, distributor timing was set and a jumper from the coil to distributor was added to my Howell EFI harness. We went ahead and pre-wired a run for tachcometer. Matt cranked it up this afternoon for the first time and sent me a text saying it is "ALIVE"...

We are going to partially fill both gas tanks tomorrow and fire it up. Fingers crossed.
 
Other noteworthy updates...

I am now the proud owner of a BJ42. I picked it up a couple weeks ago but had kept it quiet until I sorted through the collection of pieces and parts. It has a turbo diesel 3B that looks to be mostly complete. Once I am acquainted with all of the boxed parts I will have a better feel on what I need.

It was a bit overwhelming at first and I am no stranger to part stashes... Everything black is powder coated flat black. Pretty sharp.

I gotta say that looks like a fun project, no clean up and and it's all ready to go. Is that a Gozzard tub? How does it look?
 
The tub is literally a piece of artwork. I am extremely impressed with the quality and detail of Gozzard's work. I really like the fact that the dash is detachable and that the front door internal hinges are exposed for ease of assembly. I am sure I will gripe at something or another. Right now I am just trying to assess what I am missing. Believe it or not that list is growing...
 
Scott - your 76 will be perfection when you are done and the skills you are picking up along the way are priceless.

Update: the 76 was having fuel pressure issues and it was determined that the Pollack switch was installed backwards. Once that was corrected we had a fuel leak at the base of the TBI unit. We've got a new fuel line fitting to install tomorrow and Bigger Blue will come to life. The latest report was the the timing was adjusted and the engine "smoothed out" while turning her over with starting fluid... Very close!

81 BJ42 - I am close to securing a 82 harness from 3puppies that will be used as the basis for the non engine electrical. The BJ60 harness will control the 3B components. The painless harness will be the backup plan.
 
Ok, so now we know it runs. The plan is to validate that the fan kicks on at 185 degrees and that the alternator is doing its thing. Then onto the gauges to ensure they are all functioning. Then off to the exhaust shop where we can find a home for the O2 sensor. Last but not least a shake down to work out the kinks, grease some zirks and go over all major bolt torque specs...

Progress never felt so good...
