Does anyone else have photos of what they use to sleep on top of one of these? I am curious what it would cost to ship to New Orleans area. Also if you don't add one of the side "flaps" will Phils Puma mount still fit?

Did you catch the pic earlier in this thread with my sleeping setup? It works out great. My fridge always stays in place. So I only use it for solo camping. I am sure a queen air mattress would blow up and form fit right on top of the unit/seats.
If Phil's mount won't fit(by looking it prob won't as the box is right against the wheel well) I can check to see if the puma unit fits if you get me the dimensions.

Scrowley...very nice work. I commend you for taking the high road with a lot of the "overpriced" comments. I can also do the woodworking myself, but I'm more from the camp wanting to thank you for being willing to share a really nice design. I, for one, was planning to use HD drawer slides. But your, and others, comments have me rethinking this. If someone thinks it's too much money, then no one is forcing them to buy one. I know you have quite a few hours into these. Good luck with sales!

BTW...do the drawers slide easy due to the sealant, or did the bare wood slide easy too? I think I may go this route. Also, if you don't mind sharing, I would love to know what your using to attach carpet? Thx.

Thanks a lot! They sure do take some time to build. There are a lot of processes to the build. I use a wide variety of tools to get the job done efficiently.

The drawers slide great. I personally like the friction the "no slide" causes. With a heavy load on hills/etc. they don't open at high speed... There is absolutely no rattle. After heavy loads, offroad driving, and banging around the actual ball bearing drawer slides will end up rattling. AND they are VERY EPENSIVE. The clear finish I apply is to seal the wood so it doesn't/minimum shrink and expand in weather change. It does help a lot with the sliding function also.

The carpet is applied with high tack fabric spray glue and staples. Learned the upholstery game back in my lowrider/show truck days.

That's real nice work there. I can and have done a couple of these, and it's a lot more work than it looks. I like your european cabinet hinges for the flip ups wings- real classy! Thanks for sharing the photos.

One of your best designs is the drawer dividers. They are worth the time as all the stuff in mine likes to move. I tried rubber drawer liner, but round stuff still rolls.

Scrowley. Since I have Phils Puma mount on the driver's side, and the passenger side 2nd row is wider because of the arm rest, could you do a half box? If some, please PM me a price. The more I think about it, them more this idea would really work best for my set up.

I could do half a box. But I would say I could work around the puma if you give me some pics and dimension's. Maybe take up all the allowed space with puma in place and have one larger/wider drawer with flip up only on driver side.

The 2nd row seat is a 50/50 split right down the middle isn't it? The seats are the same size, just mirror images.

Mine are not the same size. the 2nd row behind driver is regular size, the one behind pax has the arm rest included so it is 7 or 8 inches wider. Mine is a 40th 1997. Not sure if those are different are not.

Finished the 4th gen. 4runner storage today. Still to do sand all, 2 coats clear, cut in pull latches, router in tie down anchors, and carpet. Waiting in some materials in the mail.

Very nice work! Lots of details with the piano hinges, fitted wings, tie down points, latches and carpet.

For the no slider doubters, I had built a stout set of drawers from 3/4" plywood with 400lb drawer slides for my HJ61. After 6 months I pulled them out because it was so much added weight. I built a new set from 1/2" cabinet grade birch, (with no hardware slides) one vertical support in the center, and the base of drawers was 1/16" up the sides. This allowed the drawers to slide on the 1/2" side pieces. So much lighter and worked like a charm for the 6 years that I used them. Never slid open by themselves, and I put quite a lot of weight in them all the time. Also, with a 1.5" memory foam mattress and front seats folded down it made a great sleeping platform that we used off road camping every summer.

This thread is inspiring me to build a set for my HDJ81:)

Scrowely, Very nice work. I built all the cBinet boxes for my house and some of the doors and face frames, doing nice cabinetry is an art and it requires skill. Nice work.
Btw, how much clearance do you allow for the drawers?

Thanks! There are a lot of details! Oh and I use BLUM euro hinges. I also leave the bottom panel of the drawers up a 1/8". I've done both ways and don't see a difference though.

Thanks! I allow 1/4" total for the drawers.

Very nice work!

Great work!

Thanks guys! I should be starting on 3rd gen runner this week . I need to get a 60 in the shop for a build.

very happy with my drawers

Bump. I have 4 box's pre cut and ready to build to suite.
Also have the 4th gen. 4runner unit up for grabs.

Nice work, well executed.

My $.02.....instead of the silver/chrome, get black hardware (rings, hasps, bolts, drawer handles, etc.) - it'll give it a more polished and refined look.

excellent work......curious....what is the weight, finished with carpet, latches and hinges? I am surprised nobody asked, unless i missed it. The attention to detail equates to a very fair price you are charging. Good for you Bro !!
