Toyota lists the nuts as 90176-08004 for the (editted) 69 through 75 F variant with the stamped steel cover. For years we sold an OEM nut (90176-08004) but that was recently discontinued and unfortunately we sold out of them. As I've search for a quality replacement I've found some discrepancy in the nut itself, some show it as a capped nut, some show it as a standard nut.

1904894

(seems to show a standard nut, I realize the EPC isn't always exact in diagrams)

1904898

Closed cap nut, similar to what I found available

1904899

Double nut with the cap nut on top?

1904900

Different yet?

This is what I've found available

1904902

I need to do two things, swing over the LCHM and pop some hoods one of these nights and also fire up my microfiche and see how far back they showed the 08004. But it's V-Day eve and I'm supposed to be getting cleaned up to take Mrs CruiserOutfit out to dinner :D

OR, perhaps someone here knows the answer? What nuts were used and when?

It would be easy to tell.

Just look for the outlier. Go through all of the schematics and find one that does not begin with 90176-XXXXX.

90176-XXXXX will always be a cap nut even if a regular hexagonal nut is shown in the catalog.

Both F135 engines I have came with standard non-capped nuts on the valve covers.
Interested in finding the answer to this question :)

(EDITTED) ~69 through 75 show the same part number in the EPC and paper catalog, 90176-08004 yet there are many examples of what one would assume are original applications. I'll have to dive into the fiche tomorrow.

You feel pretty comfortable they are original? My 65' 40 and 66' 45 also have a standard black nut.

Well that I cannot say for sure. One engine is from 1964, the other 1966. Only have a sample size of 2, but they were both the same. :)

My 1967 book shows: 94110-40800 non-cap nut (M8 x1.25)

I would assume that 90176-08004 was introduced somewhere between 1967 and 3/1969?

Other possibilities of cap nuts part numbers: 94171-xxxxx or 94176-xxxxx

I would try the following part numbers:

90176-08030
90176-08051

Alright, Mrs hasn't yelled at me yet.

1904935

1961, part G

1904936

1961 w/ 94110-40800

1904930

1967 w/ 94110-40800

1961,3,4,5,6,7 Microfiche shows 94110-40800
I don't own pre 1961 catalog, anybody able to check?
I don't own 1962 fiche but was can 100% assume it was the 94110-40800.
I don't own 1968 fiche
I do own a 1969 paper catalog, it shows the 90176-08004 and seems to indicate that it was used earlier but I think I interpreted that wrong.
So, based on that I'm assuming the 94110-40800 was used until 67 and in 68 it went to the 90176-08004

Edit: SOR shows the 94110-40800 used from 1958-1967 and the 90176-08004 used from 1968-1974

Now, the 94110-40800 has superceded to the 90170-A0001, I happed to have those in the "drawer of un-assigned hardware" :D and that totally jives with what I see on my 65/66 4x's with the exception of color. But, for all I know my valve covers were rattle canned black over the years along with the nuts.

Edit: @beno beat me too it, and I added some pics :D

All four of my F120-F135 engines are this way as well

FWIW

VCC40800 (1958-67) & VCC08004 (1968-1/1975) updated in our system and available.

My 4/73 F155 had the capped nuts. However, they had been tightened down so many times to try and cure the leaking cork that a couple had actually started to crack the cap part off. I would be leery of a short capped nut, unless used in a double nut settup, probably not enough thread to get the gasket tight. The fix was an early 2F aluminum cover and its matching nuts sold to me by Merl in Salida in 1997.
