When I went to SOR, I tested all the speedometer assemblies they had. All but 2 were 6 pulse, and the other was destroyed. My guess is that most are 6 pulse.

I happened to go check one I thought was out of a 77-78. It's four pulse. Maybe someone can come in and tell us the years. I do know it's later than 76 since it has the Km/h markings. It also doesn't have the extra plugs on the back.

Part #'s on back are.

also has 51.9.30 rubber stamped on it.

Ok, now I'm curious again. My 4 pulse does not have the km/h on the inside. So far it seems random. I'll take mine back out to check the number on it.
 
This a great thread - thanks for your work on this!

I have a 3FE in a 1974 FJ55, and it has some issues idling when hot. I doubt I have anything hooked up to the VSS...

When I go back to the pictures - sure enough, there are two connectors on back!

Does anyone have a '74 FSM and can tell me which terminal is for VSS?

Can anyone tell me if I have the 4 pulse magnets or the 6 pulse magnets in the speedo pictured below?

Last question: Does it matter to the 3FE computer if it gets a 6 pulse signal or a 4 pulse signal? I would think if it got a 6 pulse signal it would just think the Cruiser is going faster...

I forget where my thread is, but I mentioned that with the VSS on the speedo and a pic chip with some simple math you could output multiple signals with however many pulses you want on each one.
 
Not real knowledgeable on swapping 6 cyls, and their VSS compatibility, but earlier post questioned Toyota VSS compatibility with GM TBI and/or GM engine swap. 1992-older GM TBI requires 2 pulse DC VSS. 1993-newer TBI may require 2 pulse or 40 pulse. Very few GM injection applications required a 4 pulse AC VSS, just some TPI and LT-1 stuff in 1990-93. I have all the specifics on the GM requirements.
Once you figure out what VSS signal your 6 cyl. requires, you may need to convert 6 pulse to 4, or vice versa, and convert AC to DC, or vice versa. We have a frequency module that takes care of that.
Don't do like one guy above did and pay somebody $174 to make up a 2 or 4 pulse VSS that fits your metric transfer case when this stuff is already on the market for $150 or less!!!!!

Easy to figure out.

Get a continuity tester. Take that single plug off the back terminal. First sheck and see if you have continuity from the ground a ground on the back of the speedo to any of the two terminals. If not then my guess is one terminal is a ground. Since 55 speedos are housed in a foam and plastic compartment where as 40 speedo housings are grounded to the chassis through the screws. Also the 55 speedo lights have individual grounds which would lead me to believe the housing isn't grounded.

So then if you find that neither terminal is a ground hook up the each leg of the continuity tester up to the two terminals. Take a small screw driver that will just fit into the speedo cable housing mount and allow for you to rotate the speedo. Mark one side of the screwdriver and rotate it slowly around 360 degrees while checking the continuity. Should be either 4 or 6.

In order to make it work with a 3fe one side needs to be grounded and the other to the ecu. I'm sure Pappy knows.

Good to know. A box behind the speedo is a lot easier than a couple wires down around the T-case.
 
Few years back I plan the 3fe swapping
And did not get it done due to my work load at
Work. Now I am back into my swapping project.
I need to know from the Folks that already done their 3fe
Swapping.
does the F or 2F motor mount will be use on the 3FE motor?
Any modification to the motor mount?

It may be that the 6 pulse speed sensor works also. If the ECU only needs to know that the vehicle is moving then either will work.

Bottom line is you only need the speed sensor in the FJ40 speedometer.

Does anyone have the parts number for this? This thread opens with this pictured for a 3FE swap. I believe its out of an FJ80(edit). Its the Vehicle Speed Sensor. All I can find is ones that terminate with a wiring pigtail, not the mechanical end.

Has anybody used this VSS for a LS Swap. I'm told I can get the ECU changed to 4 pulses and I was thinking of using the DD transmitter, but this would require some Metric/SAE adapters. The Toyota one looks like its a pass through, so I could keep my stock speedo as well.
